- Reviewed in Canada on April 22, 2004Caddyshack not withstanding, I have always thought that "Easy Money" was Rodney Dangerfields funniest movie. Rodney plays Monty, a family man living in suburban New York.
He's a baby photographer who drinks, smokes, gambles, and eats too much. His best friend is Nicky, played hilariously by Joe Pesci. Monty's wife is the daughter of a wealthy shopping mall owner. When her mother dies in a tragic plane crash, Monty stands to inherit millions...But ONLY if he can give up smoking, drinking, gambling and lose weight for one year.
Prior to this is an outrageous night on the town the night before his daughters wedding. The next day at church, the hung over Monty has no water to take his asprin..until he spies the holy water and scoops a handful out!
After getting the news of his inheritance terms, Monty now has to struggle giving up his vices, while being constantly surrounded by temptations. Most of the temptations come via his scheming brother in law played by Jeffrey Jones who inherits the money if Monty fails.
Hilarious scenes where Monty and his friends go the the race track and Nicky attacks a jockey who threw a race...Later nicky and Monty drive all over town, drunk and trying to find a place to eat. They pull up to a place as they are just closing, with a sign saying "open 23 hours".
Later Nicky and Monty go to the mall that he will inherit and generally harass the prim and proper employees and customers. Very funny movie. Too bad there's nothing in the way of special features. Vastly underrated. One of the great comedies of the 1980's.
The only weak part of the film is the sub-plot of Monte's daughter played by Jennifer Jason Leigh's marriage and separation to Julio. That kind of bogged down the comedy at times.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 22, 2002This movie and Back To School I think are probably Dangerfield's better movies where he plays the main character. The amount of silly jokes and low standards of living that Dangerfield enjoys while being a compulsive gambler, drinker, smoker and eater is very entertaining. Dangerfield is forced to clean up his act in order to receive an large inheritance from his mother-in-law. Does Dangerfield do it? Can he stop gambling, womanizing, drinking and lose those unwanted pounds? Joe Pesci is Dangerfield's best friend in the movie and his role adds to the hilarious, silly fun in this movie as a man tries to go "clean" and inherit a fortune.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 10, 2003Monty Capuletti (Rodney Dangerfield), a hard working but lovable man, is in a bit of a stitch. He stands to inherit 10 million dollars when his snobby mother-in-law (Geraldine Fitzgerald) goes down in a plane crash. The catch: he must curb all vices for one year, which include overeating, smoking, drinking, gambling and debauchery. If he cannot reform, the moolah goes to Clive Barlow (Jeffrey Jones), a greedy relative who tries to trip up Monty on his $10 million quest, but he gets help from his best friend (Joe Pesci) and his family. Can Monty do it? Subplots involve his oldest daughter's wedding, and Monty pioneering the new fashion for his late mother-in-law's store: The Regular Guy Look.
First of all, Rodney is in top form here as your average Joe Sixpack, and the actors playing his family are great too. Joe Pesci is a little underused, but his performance makes up for it. Writing and directing are top notch. The disc gives you a choice of either full-frame or widescreen formats, both crisp and clear. The sound is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 sound, and is excellent. The extras are lacking for this great a movie: only a trailer (presented in full-frame) is present, but the movie more than makes up for this.

- Reviewed in Canada on March 9, 2002The first half-hour of this movie is one of the funniest stretches of film ever created. A day in the life of Staten Island's own Monty Capuletti: 15 minutes of work and errands followed by trips to the track, the go-go bar, the back-room craps game, and the late night diner run. This movie has it all: Rodney crashing into the Christmas tree on his stationary bike, Joe Pesci giving his armpits a quick trim, memorable quotes, great writing, great acting, and a fantastic soundtrack. Buy this movie if you've ever wondered, "What do people do when they're not gettin' loaded?"
- Reviewed in Canada on June 23, 2001This is the best Dangerfield movie ever made easily. No Disney-esque cover-ups, just raw Rodney and a younger Joe Pesci who is a perfect comedic partner for him.
It's silly, full of great one-liners, has all kinds of trashy but likeable people, and keeps you laughing from start to finish, literally, every single scene is funny.
The DVD version goes for a low price and looks great.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 11, 2002This is a movie that I had been waiting for...and the wait was well worth it. In addition to being one of the funniest movies ever made, it has also aged very well. If you loved it almost 20 years ago, you'll still love it today. It just gets funnier with every viewing! Rodney and Pesci are without a doubt one of the most dynamic comedy pairings ever! I gave this DVD 4 stars because the Spanish audio track is far superior(cleaner), to the English audio track...why?
This movie will make you feel good...buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dangerfield on target!
Verified PurchaseHaving recently got into Dangerfield's satire forms of comedy, i was gasping for more!
I took a risk and bought 3 star studded Dangerfield DVDs with this DVD being the first of the three that i had recieved following my viewing of Caddyshack. I was therefore desperate to sample some more of his work. In doing so, this film is again very funny. Like Caddyshack his comedy is in some points very quick, whitty and well timed. There are bits in it that i had to rewind and watch again for the pure laughs of it (scenes like on the excersize bike and him and Pesci in the department store are in my opinion very funny). The storyline is well thought out and cast by a select group of actors. Having been a great admirer of Joe Pesci i was equally impressed with his typical approach to comedy.
If you have seen Caddyshck you will love this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Rodney's best.
Verified PurchaseThis movie is hilarious! From the get-go, it had me rolling
around laughing! One of Rodney's best!
The movie also stars Joe Pesci as Nicky the Plumber.
(my first film I ever saw him in.)
Some great quotes include...
Nicky and Monte, at Monahans department store:
"How long do you intend to browse?"
"Hey, that lady over there, you didn't ask her how long she intends to browse.
How come you're asking us, how long we intend to browse?"
"You don't look like browsers."
"What do browsers look like?"
"Maybe I'm half-browser."
"On his father's side."
Nicky and Monte, upstairs, with the board of directors of
Monahans. Monte, has just been offered a top job, as
Fashion Consultant, and Nicky says:
"No no, take the job, take the job. The first thing we'll do
is fire that broad downstairs, who stopped us from browsing."
Nicky, explaining to Monte, how to get to New York Harbor
from Florida:
"You steam north up the Atlantic, west into the Hudson...
you come to the statue of that broad, you hang a left...."
Monte, in his basement with his poker buddies, after dinner with his family:
"So what did you tell her today."
"I said her perfume was driving me crazy. I said you'd think I married Rose to get to you...
My mother-in-law...For years I wouldn't kiss her face-I ended up kissing her ass!"
Hilarious! A must see!

4.0 out of 5 stars Missing Footage!
Verified PurchaseYears ago I was in stitches watching Rodney Dangerfield's performance in Caddyshack after that I hired Easy Money on vhs and that was just as good. So I bought it on dvd and was shocked to see that one of the best scenes of the film had been cut out. It's in the peak of his "rehabilitation" from drugs, booz, gambling and fast/fatty foods. He is at a boxing match and everyone around him including his mates are drinking, smoking and eating their hearts out and it gets to him so much he sees himself as one of the men in the boxing ring getting pounded on. It's quite a long scene and snippets of this footage are on the trailer on the dvd yet not in the film itself. It's a great scene and I don't know why they cut it out. 5 stars with the scene and 4 stars without it!
