sunny murray唯一の、ＥＳＰにおけるリーダー作。数年前にＣＤ化されたものの暫らく入手困難が続いていた。今回曲順とジャケットを替え、さらにmurrayのインタヴュー音源が追加されている。彼の肉声の聴ける音源はいずれにせよ、珍しいもの(演奏中の唸り声などは別にして)だろう。

肝心の音質だが、若干改善されているのではないだろうか。以前のＣＤでは細部が滲んだようになっていてバスドラなど聴きにくかった(“giblet”の冒頭など)が、このリ・イシューでは音像が明確になっている気がする。

曲順の差し替えだが、個人的には以前と同じくＬＰの順序に従って欲しかった。インパクトの強い“giblet”を最後に置く意図がよく判らない。あと２、３曲目に表記ミスがあり、実際には演奏１曲を挟んで又インタヴューが続く。

演奏そのものは文句なし。スネア、シンバル、バスドラを縦横に駆使してフロントの３管を煽り倒す。そしてal silvaのアプローチが極めて衝撃的であり、彼らと対決するようなインプロではなく、速いドラムの連打にたいしてゆったりと滑らかなアルコ奏法にて全体の音をヴィジュアリスティック(映像的)な世界に変質せしめている。このアプローチは当時のフリー・ジャズ/インプロ・シーンにあって完全に異質なものだったと思う。

When I was in college twenty years ago, I remember the first time this avant-garde jazz label's discs were reissued. I was really in to late Coltrane, and I simply couldn't get enough music from this scene. I bought most of those original ESP CDs, but for some reason I overlooked this album by Sunny Murray. In many ways, I'm glad I did. First, it's been kind of hard to put this music on the family stereo when the kids are running around, so I must confess it's been a while since I've listened to the genre. It was terrific reacquainting myself with this creative music. Second, this edition of "Sunny Murray" has a wonderful, insightful 25 minute interview with the legendary drummer about his life and his music. And speaking of the music, it's outstanding and wild here. Two of the players are veterans of the ESP scene and its recordings, alto saxophonist Byard Lancaster and bassist Alan Silva, while the other two men, trumpeter Jacques Coursil and fellow altoist Jack Graham, between them only appear on one other recording (it's Coursil on Frank Wright's Complete Esp-Disk Recordings). The band ventures out in to some impressive territory, which isn't for everyone, but after all those years I was sure up for a Sunny adventure.

I would give the music on this disc 4 stars; but though I appreciate the current esp label for reissuing this title they totally f'd it up. First, it was a stupid idea to put a 23 minute interview segment at the beginning of the disc; interviews are not something you generally listen to again and again as you would with the music. Track 2 is then listed as a brief interview segment with esp founder Bernard Stollman. In fact track 2 turns out to be the first track of the original album. The Stollman segment then occurs as track 3, which means that you can't listen to the 4 tracks that make up the original album uninterrupted without skipping the Stollman segment. I repeat: what is so #$@&* hard?!?!

Asa " Drummer" i am well aware of the " Criticism " of Drummers being ONE TRICK PONIES. This is for the majority a fair assessment . BUT Sunny Murray shows to ALL MUSICIANS that " Drumming " can aspire to the heights created by musicians more accepted as " Creative Forces.". Murray is a GENIUS to ALL who have EARS.
