Purchase options and add-ons
Now from Rockport Publishers and including new content: Apple Black, Volume 1.
Raised in isolation to be the world’s savior known as the Trinity, young sorcerer Sano ventures out to train with other talented magic-users just as evil emerges again to threaten the world.
Many years ago, humans acquired fruits called “Black” from a tree that descended from the skies, which turned humans into sorcerers. Although all of Black is now extinct, humans still have sorcery inherited from their ancestors. As generations go by, the effects of Black in the bloodline diminishes and sorcerers use a variety of objects as “wands” to harness their magical power. Blessed by “Merlin,” the god of sorcery, with the Arodihs arm, the young sorcerer Sano has the ultimate wand. He is raised and trained in isolation and secrecy to be the world’s savior known as the Trinity. The savior is believed to be the one who dawns the Infinite Night, an eternal night of chaos.
Sano begins his training amongst a group of other talented new magic-users where many already know his name. Sano gets a fiery start after being admitted to Black Bottom Island’s guild for young sorcerers with his newfound freedom. As his fellow gifted allies and sorcerers accompany Sano on his quest, the treachery, betrayal, and evil that have plagued nearly all of Eden emerge again to threaten the world. Can Sano survive the threats on his young life?
Apple Black is rated T for Teen, recommended for ages 13 and up.

Good manga style and engaging story

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 July 2022There are various story elements in Apple Black that feel very familiar, various character and journey tropes that can seem quite stale when considered in isolation, and if you dissected it analytically, you could certainly boil it down to some common base ingredients. However for younger readers who aren’t so cynical, that of course isn’t so much of a problem.
Despite this though, I’d have to say that this story really drew me in. It starts with a classic tease, a very dramatic first spread to set the scene before the slower atmospheric character introductions start, but before you know it, it becomes a bit of a page turner.
The art style is often fairly straightforward, with some pages played entirely straight in a comic book fashion, just faces and speech bubbles for the dialogue and little else. At times it does feel a little exposition-heavy, and I did think of the old storywriting adage “show don’t tell” a couple of times. But when it comes to life with action and drama, the art works really well- energetic, high-contrast stuff with some lovely juxtapositions and set pieces. The contrast between white-backed and black-backed pages works well.
For parents of younger readers, there are some minor points of concern- a bit of broody smoking of cigarettes and of course a little bit of cartoon violence akin to a Marvel film- but not much by way of bad language or, shall we say, excessively feminine costumes, that kind of thing.
And of course, it leaves you hanging at the end, teasing the Saturday Wars…
If your kids want to watch some anime or another Marvel film and you want them to have a screen break, try chucking them this!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 November 2022A good story for those into their anime and manga - decent artwork and a story that zips along at a good pace.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 July 2022This is Volume 1 of a series of at least 2 books and contains a cliff-hanger ending that wants you want to continue reading.
The story follows the cover character Sano Bengote Tamashii. The infinite night, “the greatest terror the world will ever experience”, is nigh, and the prophecy says that only one boy, known as the Trinity, can stop it. Sano is built up to be that boy. This book follows him as he joins Black Bottom Island’s Guild for Young Sorcerers and meets the characters there. He of course has issues with some of them, and there are fights, and there is good versus evil, and there are people out to get Sano with a bounty put upon him, and so on.
There is quite a lot of text in this book for a comic book. And it is quite concept heavy, with concept built upon concept. But it does build up the tension well I think.
Also, a note for the publisher should you be reading my humble review… when reading this on the train someone commented to me whether there was an anime made of this. I don’t think there is, I think this is in comic format only. But there is a demand for anime films to be made into comic books it seems, and maybe vice versa.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 July 2022Our ten year old son has started to really get into manga style comics over the last year or so. This book was therefore very much right up his street. Full of action, heroism and great graphics, he got hooked very quickly and devoured it with enthusiasm. As soon as he finished it, the first thing he asked was “can I get the next one?”. He was so enthusiastic about it, he actually asked in our local bookshop and was gutted to find out the second book haven’t yet been released.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 July 2022This manga style book looks like and is read like a western novel. The manga drawing is expressive and meaningful. The dialogue is mainly concise with the usual symbols to represent some feelings. The story is solidly manga in that a young hero is in the making and needs to be educated in the ways of saving the world from evil. Good clean fun and fast paced to keep any young manga fan happy.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 June 2022I’ve followed Whyt Manga and his Apple Black series for some time now and have his previous versions of his books. This time it is so nice to see Apple Black out there on the shelves. A seriously talented artist with a great concept - his art style is inspired by the series Bleach and when you keep that in mind, you appreciate it even more. This is a slug fest of mystical proportions and a fun spin on the concept of a wand being sort of like the Bankai mode in Bleach. Highly recommended !
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 July 2022My nephew loves manga and he thinks is this book is great. Great graphics and an interesting story which he really enjoys reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome graphic style
When I just looked at the cover, I was impacted that the graphic style was very accurate like one of my favorite mangakas (I am talking about Bleach's creator, Tite Kubo)
I was impressed of the plot and the storylines.
Keep doing a great job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it twice
Before start, I want to make it clear that I believe this is a great manga. The settimg is wonderous, yet shows that it has a hidden edge that's impossible to ignore. Sano, the protagonist, is charming and a nice twist on the "chosen one" trope. And the supporting cast is very intersting, especially the bad guys.
However, to fully realize all of this, I had to read this volume twice. There is a lot of setup done ( for good reason) in this volume so there are times where it's hard to pay attention to and appreciate everything. However, when I did my second read with the info I knew, I was able follow the story with ease and enjoy it way more.
Outside of the story, the art and action choreography is exceptional to say the least. And after reading the 2nd and 3rd volumes, I'm happy to say they only get better.
All the staple shonen out there better watch out, cause Apple Black is coming in HOT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Apple black
I am generally impressed with both volumes of Apple Black I have read thus far. The art is impressive and the story tracks far better than it did in the periodical which I found myself getting lost from one battle in one issue to the next battle in the next issue. Given that the OP character in Shonen manga is a grossly overused genre trope, I will say Whyt blends it well into the overall arc of “the hero’s journey” monomyth and particular the temptation to use evil in order to do good.
I will say that while this property and the Saturday AM brand has garnered a reputation, undeservedly for broadcasting aggressive “preachy woke” politics, I largely find this not to be true. The characters may be diverse in any of a numbre of ways, the stories are… pretty universal, if not perhaps too tied to the Jump styled genres.
Apple Black is just plain fun.
