    A few years ago I bought a Jools Holland `And Friends' album that featured Marianne Faithfull singing Dylan's Gotta Serve Somebody. I was entranced by the husky voice that had obviously seen life and knew of what it was speaking. I determined to find more from this lady whom I had previously only heard of as a footnote in the history of the Rolling Stones.

    I was amazed when I bought this album. Her voice was so different! It has a sweet, pure quality that suggests a certain air of innocence. It's full of passion, but none of the pain that would mark her later recordings. I was equally entranced by it as I was by her Jools Holland performance.

    This collection takes recordings mainly made in 1964-66, and one from 1969. They are presented in stereo I believe, and have a pretty decent mastering, unusually good for a CD released in 1987. There is nothing form her later famous albums such as Broken English. Liner notes are fascinating, and there is a comprehensive list of details about recording ad release dates, as well as catalogue numbers.

    It's a classic album of mid sixties girl singer, taking on pop hits, and more adventurous material with a folk and blues leanings. 5 stars, it's entrancing.

    中学生のとき、たぶん東京ローカルだったと思いますが、深夜枠でアパレルメーカー提供のイギリスの音楽番組を放送していました。ディープパープルなどのライブを観た記憶があるのですが、この番組のマスコットガールがエロかわいいと思って名前を憶えていました（ちゃんとクレジットがあった）。当時、アランドロンとチャールズブロンソンの映画が仲間内では人気があって、ＴＶでもよくかかっていました。そのうちの一本に彼女の名前がクレジットされているのを観て、あのこは女優だったんだとわかりました。しかも大胆な演技で、映画の内容もかなりクレイジーなものだったのでヤケクソで売り出そうとしているのかなと思ったりもしていましたが、ＦＭで聴いた「かわいい小鳥」という意味深な感じの歌を彼女が歌っていると知ったとき、なんて不思議な存在感のひとなのだろうと認識を新たにしたものです。
    彼女がミックジャガーの彼女だったと知ったのは、もっとずっと後のことです。私自身、多感な時期のことだったので、このアルバムすべてが、その頃の懐かしさに溢れています。素朴で決してうまいとは思えないのですが、初々しさが身上だったのかもしれません。その後、パティスミスのようなガラガラ声の激情的なロックを歌ったオバサンと同じひととは、とても思えません。アンルイスや吉田美奈子にも、どこか通じるところがあるように感じます。それが私の知っているマリアンヌフェイスフルです。
