Product description
Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve star as members of a French theater company living under the German occupation during World War II in François Truffaut s gripping, humanist character study. Against all odds a Jewish theater manager in hiding; a leading man who s in the Resistance; increasingly restrictive Nazi oversight the troupe believes the show must go on. Equal parts romance, historical tragedy, and even comedy, The Last Metro (Le dernier metro) is Truffaut s ultimate tribute to art overcoming adversity.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is all about the acting...a great movie: My rating is 10 out of 10. Not a single disappointment.
An exquisite movie based in Paris during WW11 when under German Control- the focus is around theatre and the Jewish involvement in the arts & entertainment. It is not a thriller or really a drama... it is a carefully constructed story that takes you on a journey involving several interlocked but very different characters - it is sub-titled in French; normally I hate this format, but did not find it much of a distraction- still you do miss subtle facial expressions and gestures... it would be worth a second watch, and to not focus as much on the French captions. The movie is very artistic and the plot beautifully evolved.
You would believe this movie to be a classic from the 1950’s, but was released in 1980. Catherine Deneuve is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest French films
I've been looking for this movie for almost a decade and finally got to watch it. It is one of the best foreign films I've ever seen. Can be slow, but it's very well acted and it can't get better than having Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu in one film. Highly recommended!

1.0 out of 5 stars looks like it has been watched a 100 times
I bought this as a new DVD, it is not... looks like it has been watched a 100 times. Very disappointed and embarrassed to show it... How can you sell this as a new DVD? C'est un affront ...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful War Movie without the fighting.
This is a fantastic film about real life in Paris during the war. While you are very aware that the war is going on, there are no fighting scenes. The black market, the jewish deportation, the lack of certain food, the irregular power, and much more, all brought out living conditions and very real dangers in war-time Paris. Catherine Deneuve is, as usual, gorgeous and Depardieu plays a wonderful role. Worth rewatching several times!
