This first volume of 'Evangelion' does a fantastic job of easing you into the story. Introducing most of the main characters in one form or another, you don't need any prior experience of the anime to understand this book. Interestingly, events here happen in a different order than the series, and some things don't happen at all (such as the ghostly image of Rei in the anime). Maybe this is because the manga started before the anime aired? The extras in this book are excellent, and Viz should be praised for it's translation and indexing all the sound effects at the back of the book (yay!) for easy reference. This stops them having to physically change the sound effects to english, which alters the art. And Sadamoto's art is amazing. Not hard to see why he's considered one of the best. The pastel colours of the outside cover contrasts so well with black, white and grey screentones of the story. I'm not going to ruin the story, but if you enjoy sci-fi or stories based on characters, then this book is a good read. Even if you're an Evangelion aficionado, the differences in character and scenario will have you gripped. By the end, you'll definatly want to read the other volumes! (P.S Did anyone else see Unit 00's arm sticking out of the bulkhead on page 50? - Cool!)
