First, I'm not a professional reviewer by a long shot. That said, I do have things to share about a soundtrack I love.
I love the movie, and I love the soundtrack. Of all five Pirates movie soundtracks, this is the first and the one that I will always remember for the distinctive themes that were introduced and continue to be heard with variations in the later films. This and the soundtrack from "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" are my favorite Pirates soundtracks and I can listen to them over and over.
Notable tracks:
1: Fog Bound - Starts with a smooth yet lilting tune which appears again within Track 6. I couldn't get this one out of my head, even tried whistling or humming it--playful but "pirate-y." This is followed by a dark melody of peril and dread, lightening near the end to transition into
2: The Medallion Calls - Brief transition that leads into what the overarching, proud theme of the Pirates movies (Or is it Captain Jack Sparrow's theme? IMO, it should be). With French horns, brass, and strings abounding with great harmonies, I can't imagine who wouldn't love this theme!!! The music is majestic and yet can be varied to be sly, foreboding, forbidding, or sad. Great theme! Can be heard again within Tracks 3 and 4.
5 & 10: Swords Crossed, To the Pirate's Cave, respectively - Driving theme introduced in Track 5 and variation of it in Track 10. Exciting and macabre and embodies the crew of the Pearl.
6: Walk the Plank - I love the whimsy within this track. Playful peril?
7: Barbossa is Hungry - Barbossa is a cool and scary dude...like him and/or hate him at the same time--he's very distinctive. A variation on the main theme is included within this driving, powerful track.
8: Blood Ritual - Slow and beautiful, then relentlessly driving. It sounds like a new theme mingled with or a variation on the main theme. Love this one.
9: Moonlight Serenade - Same theme, different feel and emotion.
11: Skull and Crossbones - Combines and overlays themes. Love this one.
12: Bootstrap's Bootstraps - Grim, urgent, exciting, then returns to main theme. Love it.
13: Underwater March - A little eerie, with a very cool return to the main theme and then a lovely almost romantic feel, and finally the actual march underwater by the crew of the Pearl (creepy-ish).
14: One Last Shot - Love the beginning of this track - whimsical and pirate-y! Very memorable. Transitions to a romantic theme and then the main theme. There is a triumphal finale feel to this track. Gives me goosebumps and a big smile.
15: He's a Pirate - I'm not sure this theme is for Captain Jack or for Will, or for all pirates. Or maybe it is named for a line spoken in the movie. It just plain fits and completes the movie.
Highly recommended, especially if you love themed music, or if you enjoy listening to music without the interruption of lyrics, as I often do.
