Stars Billy Mumy (TV's "Lost In Space"), Barry Robins (TV's "The Paul Muni Story"), Miles Chapin (Man on the Moon), Darel Glaser (An Enemy of the People) and Bob Kramer (TV's "Mr. Merlin"). - Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2024I had this movie on VHS for years - and although I didn't watch it often - I like having it in my collection. My VHS player has long died and I've been adding DVD copies of my 'oldies but goodies' over time. This movie was difficult to find at a reasonable price, so I was surprised and happy to see it on amazon. Plays perfect, of course.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2012When I first saw this flawed film in 1971 in the theater at age 30, I so loved it that I decided it was the best movie I ever
saw. Based on the book by Gordon Swarthout, the film is about 6, misfit adolescent boys who sneak away from their cowboy
summer camp to try and release buffaloes from a penned location in Arizona where they are killed at close range by
"hunters" who drew lottery tickets to thin the herds. This Government process actually did occur back in those days,
and the film includes official "kill" footage. The movie itself is very emotional and a first class tearjerker. It is one of only
two or three films in my life that actually made me cry profusely two or three times. But after seeing it repeatedly in the
theatres, and later on VHS, and with more experience cinematically, I can see why it wasn't considered a great film.
The 6 boys are largely caricatures, and the film can't decide whether it is a comedy or a drama. Some scenes are
buffoonish, and other's extremely real and disturbing. But the climax mixes triumph and tragedy very effectively, which
was different from the book, and made the ending extremely powerful. So while I still love the film, I can see why many
may find it too cloying and sentimental, or too realistic in some scenes, while corny or silly in others. But since Stanley
Kramer is considered one of the great directors of film, a true buff owes it to him or herself to see it and decide where
it fits in his rather lengthy catalogue.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2023Saw this one when it first came out years ago, I believe I was about 16 or 17. It really brought home some social/morality (I think that's the word that I want to use) issues, and makes you think about what was going on in the world then, and watching it just recently made me think also about what is going on in the world now. Pretty much the same thing, but in slightly different concept and scope these days.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2024Saw this as a young boy in the mid seventies. Watched it alone, and kept the experience I had to myself until now. in 2024, it's a nostalgic movie for me, though I can never go back and capture the feelings I had as a kid seeing this for the first time. I recall that day clearly. I had intense anger, sadness, and shame for the first time towards humanity, upon my realizations and seeing the world and many adults as ugly and horrible for the first time. This movie started me down a path, that I am still on today. One that has morphed into one of compassion, forgiveness, gratitude, and playfulness... though still with a tinge of sadness sometimes, for those that have not be able to open their hearts, those that cannot see.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2023It is nice to have this movie in my collection. I watched it with my grandson. He enjoyed it. The last time I saw it was when it was first released. It's exactly what I remembered. The DVD played well with no skips, fuzzy scenes, or issues. High quality.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2024I remember this movie from my teen years. It is as good now as it was back then! Love it!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2023I saw this movie when I was just a kid and remembered how good it was and wanted to see again! With all the bullying that goes on these days perfect movie to see how these kids (that all thought were misfits) came together for a good cause!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2016I liked it as a 12 year old, but it doesn't hold up. Billy Mummy as a tough guy. Ummm., maybe not. Give it a shot if you can see it for free, don't pay for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very moving story.
It may be an American "Boys' Camp" story, but it's a really good one touching on some very poignant social issues of the time and the present.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive
A group of boys try to save a bison herd from sportshunters. Each boy has a troubled life and the film shows flashbacks of their lives. A beautiful film from early 70ies.
