If mainstream jazz is your bag, the Mel Brown Quartet brings you bop, ballads and scintillating originals making you gald you have ears. With over 100 years of collective experience, here's a group that knows the tradition and brings it boldly to the bandstand on every gig. Mel Brown was a featured drummer with Motown greats The Temptations, The Supremes etc., but is even better at the jazz kit where he is one of the true masters of his instrument. On this outing, with his favorite group, he is joined by young jazz master Tony Pacini at the piano, Northwest guitar legend Dan Balmer (Tom Grant, Joey Defrancesco, David Friesen) and acoustic bass giant Ed Bennett (Carmen McRae, Toshiko Akioshi, Lew Tabakin etc.) on a set of tunes that reflects their three years of steady work together. The groups brings back warm memories of Wes Montgomery's groups as well as those of Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson, Monty Alexander etc. You are sure to love the swinging sounds of 'Brown Baggin'

Overall, this is a wonderful recording by an iconic Portland jazz group. Tony Pacini's arrangements are outstanding, particularly with "Girl Talk" and "Just squeeze me". The energy and sensitivity with which the group approaches each song really shines through. Well worth a listen!
