About the Author
Marianne Celce-Murcia (Ph.D. in Linguistics, 1972) is Professor Emerita of Applied Linguistics and TESL at the University of California, Los Angeles, where for 30 years she taught primarily graduate students, preparing to be language teachers and researchers. Beyond her work at UCLA, she taught in and administered English language programs in Nigeria (1964-1966), Egypt (Fall, 1980), Canada (Summer, 1983), and Armenia (2003-2007). She has lectured and led workshops all over the U.S. and in many other countries as well. In addition to her co-authorship (with Diane Larsen-Freeman) on the three editions of "The Grammar Book," she is co-editor (with Donna Brinton and Marguerite Ann Snow) of the fourth edition of "Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language" (2014) and series co-editor (with Maggie Sokolik) of the five-volume, content-based "Grammar Connection" series (2008-2009), all with Cengage Learning, who (as Heinle & Heinle) presented her with their lifetime achievement award in 1997. At UCLA Marianne was honored for distinguished teaching both as a graduate student (1964) and as a professor (1976).

- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2025Detailed. Good for any teavher who teaches ESL/EFL.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2015The subtitle of the book which suggests it is an ESL Teacher's Guide is really MISleading ... it's one of the FINEST all-around books on English grammar EVER published, and is one where the reader must have a good degree of "prior knowledge" to appreciate the information contained in this book some of which I've never seen in any other English grammar book! There were a couple of areas that were condensed in this the 3rd edition that are expanded in the 2nd ed which is why I'm keeping my old edition; conversely, Professor Larsen expands on other areas in her 3rd ed which is a fair tradeoff. Also, the graphics and the layout using bold face type makes it an easier read this time around. Forget that it's geared for ESL students ... EVERY English teacher should at least be aware of this book if not have it as a permanent part of their classroom reference library. Additionally, I love the index / reference section at the end of the book where certain words can be looked at ["maybe vs perhaps" "some vs any," etc.] + the standard index of specific English topics, e.g., conditional sentences, prepositions, etc. Absolutely and positively LOVE this book! -- VictorGM@webtv.net
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2022This is a great resource for learning how to teach grammar to others, as well as getting to the nitty-gritty if grammar for yourself.
Seller did an excellent job, book is in perfect/new condition and was shipped quickly and safely.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2018This book is quite thorough and does a very good job of explaining the different grammar points. My main criticism is that, as a textbook, it is quite heavy and bulky and probably does not need a hard cover.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2019It's a really fat and heavy book, but there is a lot of very helpful information in it. This is one of the textbooks that I'm really glad I got.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2016I am so excited to read this book. I have heard it is the book to have for ESL grammar teachers. This is the book that my professor recommended. I have yet to read it, but by skimming it, it looks thorough.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2016I have known Dr. Larsen-Freeman work since I studied my first MA in late 1980s. Now I'm working on my EdD, and bought the latest edition. This book is a must in every graduate student's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful
A great book by a great teacher and academic. A good reference for anyone wanting to teach English as a second language.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for teaching grammar to non native speakers of English
This is one of the most complete grammar books that I hace ever read. Nevertheless, it requires a great understanding of grammar, as it's is nota meant for ESL beginners, but rather advanced or teacher's. It also includes some suggestions on how to introduce or teach some grammar topics. This is a must for every ESL teacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars CGEL
Larsen-Freeman and Celce-Murcia, M. The Grammar Book: Form, Meaning, and Use for English Language Teachers (National Geographic Learning)の形で出版されたが、著者が入れ替わり、サブタイトルも出版社も異なっているので、評者は上記のAmazon カスタマーさんのレビューを読むまでCelce-Mircia &Larsen-Freeman(1983)の第3版であることを見落としていた。
改めて3冊を比べてみると、初版655頁、第2版854頁、第3版は判型も大型化し911頁もある。新しい知見、情報を取り入れて充実化して行く方向が読み取れる。具体例としてwhom の記述を比較してみる。初版(p.371)、第2版(p. 582)では「前置詞が後置される場合はwhoが好まれ, 前置詞が前置される場合はwhom のみ可」と言った趣旨の説明がなされていた (e.g. I spoke with the student who(m) I loaned the book to./I know the student to whom[*who] I loaned the book.)」が、第3版(p.618)ではこれに加えて…In the COCA spoken corpus(mostly TY news programs), for example, whom with prepositions accounts for over two-thirds of the total uses of whom(5037)...のような注記が加わった。コーパス根拠(corpus evidence)により記述がより客観的になり、信頼性が高まったといえよう。CGELなどと共にぜひ手元に備えたい記述文法書である。

5.0 out of 5 stars Maravilhoso
Comprei no marketplace por um preço maravilhoso, nem acreditei, basicamente convertendo era o mesmo preço em dólar. Esse livro é um dos mais completos atualmente, especialmente na sintaxe do inglês. Pra quem faz uma graduação em inglês, é um excelente conteúdo e muito bem explicado.
