Does not work for Ford F150, ok for Grand Cherokee

Does not work for Ford F150, ok for Grand Cherokee
I got this to put in my 2013 Ford F150 which has round air vents. Unfortunately the vent fins are deeper than the phone holder grab bar will extend, and I think they are too thick also. So I put it in my husband's 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it worked fine. It tightens down well and feels very secure. The side bars are deep and hold my Samsung Galaxy Note 10 with a flip cover securely. There is a divided bottom bar that keeps the phone from sliding down and allows use of a charging cord. To release you press buttons on both sides of the holder under the side bars and the bars slowly open, and stop opening when you release the buttons. To secure the phone you press the side bars together. The phone just out about 3-4" from the vents so does not impede air flow as much as some others do.I'm a little worried about the internal opening mechanism lasting over time. I'm not sure how it works, but the fact that it slowly opens suggests some kind of pressure release that could possibly wear out. The angle of the phone can be adjusted by a ball-socket connection that gets locked down by tightening a screw collar, it was easy to use and seemed to tighten it securely. Too soon to tell if it will last through use and bumps.

Thsi product is well designed. I bought it for my F-150 truck and had intended to put it to the right of the steering wheel but the holder would interfere with the gear selector. So I moved it to the left side and it works just fine there. I used voice commands while driving (for safety) so the location matter less than having the darn thing stay where I place it.

The adjustments accommodate just about any size phone. Mine is an iphone 13 Pro and there is plenty of room for larger phones such as the Pro Max.

I got this to try as I do not have another good place for a phone holder in my car. I've been skeptical of the vent holders, but thought I would give it a shot. This holder is slightly a pain to install as you have to screw down the hook that loops around the back side of the vent and then pinch the clip that clips onto the actual vent fin. In my Mazda 3 the vents are slanted and I could not do the clip without turning it so that the thing you pinch to open the clip was on top and not on the bottom. It was impossible to get it to stay the other way around. Once it was in place it worked great! Holds the phone in place well and I like that it is easy to swivel between portrait and landscape view for GPS. I like that either side button will open the arms and release the phone so this would be good for left handed or right handed use. It has a good firm hold on the vent so it doesn't move around while you are typing like another model I tried. It does bounce a bit going down the road, but it is minimal. I did install this in my mom's Honda CRV and had no trouble what so ever installing it or using it. Her vents are flat and not sloped like mine which made it a lot easier all around. I would still order this again for my car. Only downside at all is how much heat is hitting my phone now that the weather had dropped off cold, but my phone did not seem to have issues with it.

There are many inexpensive dash-vent cellphone mounts and we got four of these to test on a Subaru Forester and a Fiat 500, cars with fairly typical dash air-vents. In addition to this Lotuny Car Phone Holder we tested: Memofo Car Phone Holder ($6, not presently available); Osilly Phone Mount ($8); and New Trent Car Phone Holder ($10). These all work essentially the same, using a small hook to catch onto the back of a vent vane. Except for the Memofo holder they all work satisfactorily but all vibrate a little and none are as rigid and secure as a mount made specifically for a particular car that screws into some appropriate place on the dash. Of the four models tested, this model and the New Trent make the most secure connection. The New Trent model has a somewhat higher quality appearance and costs less. We have left the Lotuny model installed on the Fiat with satisfactory results.

I have been driving for a long while and I have seen a variety of phone mounts over time. I have used the ones that glue onto your dashboard and give up the ghost in hot sun, sometimes damaging the dashboard in the process, the clip ones that clip to the vent and fall off on the first bump and the suction mounts that attach to the wind shield.

Anyways, this mount comes in two pieces (a) the piece that connects to the vent and (b) the actual phone mount that holds the phone. Both these pieces are connected via a ballhead that allows you to orient the phone to your heart's content.

So - for the vent mount part of it, its fine, OK. A 4/5 I would say. I recently installed a magsafe mount on my driver side vent and the hook that goes inside the vent was much longer and a bit wider than this one. That being said, this one functions, so no points off for that. There is a bit of ingenuity in this design on top of the vent hook i.e. the clip. So, instead of just relying on the hook, they have additionally added a lever to the mount which you press down and that opens two plastic clamps that can grab the vent fin. That is fairly ingenuous. Unfortunately, the vents in my Toyota Sienna hybrid are made kind of weird and the clamp did not work for me but the vent mount still grabbed on and in fact better than the magsafe mount that I had previously purchased. Overall, it works, so a 4/5

Now let's get to the phone mount part of this. With my magsafe mount, I realized that the magnet holds onto my phone pretty strong, which is something I DO WANT! However, when I am taking the phone off, I have to pull it, which means I am applying force on the vent fin. I did not think about pulling onto the vent everytime I took the phone off when I bought it but it did become apparent. I have a concern that one day, the vent fin may just give up. This one does not suffer from the same problem and that is again due to a very ingenuous solution on the mount design. In the vertical orientation, you push two small buttons on each side of the phone mount and that causes the two clamps for your phone to _automatically_ spread out to max position. There is no force needed in this step on the mount. Then you put your phone inside gently and then you gently just push the clamps back so your phone is secure. That's it. When you need to take the phone out, you press the two buttons on the two sides, without applying any undue force on the vent fin and the clamps expand automatically. Boom!! Mind blown!! 🤯🤯🤯

Ok, really, I can hypothesize that the way they have designed is there is some version of rack and pinion with a spring thrown in to push the phone clamps apart when you press the button. When you leave the button, something obstructs the rack movement and your mount stays exactly where it is. The reason I have this theory is because I can see very tiny, like 0.5mm teeth at the bottom of the clamp.

Anyway, for non mechanically inclined folks, the clamps work by magic :)

The phone rotates, angles to any orientation and in general can be positioned as you want. The look of the phone mount is pretty cool with the texture on the inside of the mount.

Ovearll:
Construction: 5/5
Looks 5/5
Function 5/5
Not applying unnecessary stress on my vent fin - 10/5

Sadly, amazon only allows a max of 5/5 so that is where this will stay.

This mount sticks too far out from the vent and I hit my hand on it when using the steering wheel. It also sites a bit too "low" in the vent (even at the highest point) to make my phone be visible above the steering wheel. I tried in on the passenger vent, but it doesn't "turn" enough side to side for someone sitting in the driver seat to be able to see the phone screen. All of that said - it is extremely sturdy, it stays well in the vent with the added arm (and fits nicely on the vent in my 2011 Subaru Legacy) and the phone stays secure. It does rattle a bit if it's empty, but seems to be better if you close the side arms.
