Product Description

Romantic comedy starring Renee Zellwegger and Harry Connick Jr. Lucy Hill (Zellwegger) is a high-powered businesswoman living a luxury life in Miami. When she is sent to a small town in icy Minnesota to oversee the restructuring of a blue collar manufacturing plant, the adjustment process takes a while. Extremely vanilla and listless script and plot; Minnesotans are patronized as frozen, beer-swilling, Bible-thumping (in a nice Midwestern way, no snake handling or rolling on floors), tapioca-worshipping, hillbillies, Renee's character is the usual clueless female executive these formulaic rom-coms never run out of, Connick is the typical hairy slob who needs the influence of a good woman to shape him up (one unusual touch -- he's a commie! Well, a labor spokesman in his factory, which in most states is seen as the next closest thing), there is no chemistry between the leads, and very little humor that doesn't come off as contrived. The funniest scenes, in fact, are the deleted "trolls" sequences, the only zany touch in this dishwater plodder, and deleted Renee pratfalls. Strictly by the numbers and unbelievable. Note: Amazon's listing information is incomplete, there ARE bonus features on this DVD: deleted scenes, "Making Of" featurettes, and an audio commentary track by cast and crew (I haven't listened to this yet so can't comment on how informative or bland it might be).

    As a Minnesotan, my video library contains some "must own" classics such as Fargo and Grumpy/Grumpier Old Men, those stereotypical movies we watch and laugh at ourselves when it's too cold to go outside and do anything productive. So when I learned of another "Minnesota classic", it piqued my interest.

    I hemmed and I hawed about renting vs. buying, I didn't know if it would be worth the extra watches. If I was not a Minnesotan, I probably would have settled for renting, been happy with the one view, and moving on with my life. But since this has a (fictional) connection to my life, I thought maybe I just better buy it, and I'm glad I did, I can see this going into the regular rotation.

    The story is "aww", predictable, standard romcom fare. But it's a feelgood story that you won't regret watching. I expected as much, so it doesn't lose a star there for me. Sometimes the familiar is comfortable and the reason we watch something. But I did knock it down a star because the Minnesota tropes in this movie are surprisingly, a little overdone.

    We have a way about us, for sure, but the movie amplifies it, likely for comedic effect, but it's just not realistic. That said, when I want to laugh at "my people", this will be a good way to do it. Minnesotan or not, I recommend this movie.

    nur ans Herz legen.
    Im Übrigen konnte ich an der Bluray samt Hülle keine Mängel feststellen, man kann also ruhig zugreifen.
