Seifer's life is about to become a royal pain. . . . As captain of the local skullball team, Seifer Tombchewer is the envy of his peers. He's fast, he's strong, and he flies circles around the competition. But Seifer's always dreamed of more--of leaving his tiny, remote village for a new life beyond the mountains.
He just never dreamed it would happen like this. Knocked unconscious and abducted, Seifer awakens in the royal palace to learn that Prince Talon Pandemonium has gone missing. And since Seifer is a ringer for Talon, it's his duty to replace the missing royal in his roles of diplomat, warrior, and Lord Defender of the Realm.
He might fool Talon's sisters. He might fool Talon's army. But Seifer has little hope of fooling Talon's enemies. . . .
Chris Wooding and debut artist Cassandra Diaz team for a classic tale of mistaken identity set against the breathtakingly original backdrop of the Darkling Realm.

Editorial Reviews
Review
((star)) "This nail-biter will keep readers glued to the story until the very last page is turned.... Wooding has fashioned an elaborate fantasy in which the world is dark and the peril is real." - School Library Journal, starred review
"The fast-paced story line and whimsically dangerous setting will capture plenty of attention. Even more eye-catching are the interspersed sections where comic book panels replace textual narrative... making this a memorable multimedia experience." - Publishers Weekly
"What seems to be a typical horror plot takes several delicious twists as the teens learn more about their surroundings.... The creative formatting, fast pace, and classic horror elements will surely satisfy any teen who loves a good scare." - The Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books

- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2013The story starts with a game of skullball, throwing you right into the macabre action Chris Wooding is famous for. This new game gives a a fast paced intro into the world of Seifer Tombchewer. It sets the stage for the new remodel of the prince and pauper story. With Seifer Tombchewer as the pauper in this tale, he has to be a ringer for the missing prince. As it happens, Prince Talon Pandemonium is missing and for a month now too. With national stability at risk, Seifer was brought into the castle at the almost secrecy by a band of miget spies on the order of a crotchety advisor. As a mountain boy, he has no idea how be royal or lead armies, and no time to learn. Thrust into diplomatic issues with the bordering nation, Seifer is put to the test. Facing threats from not only the other nations but from inside the Darkling nobility, will Seifer manage as prince?
Fooling the people in the royal castle won't be easy for Seifer, but with a little humour and some really great lines, it makes the task seem not so bad. With witty side characters and one strong main character, Chris Wooding weaves a new twist on the classic tale of the prince and pauper. Action, humor, and macabre, Chris Wooding with the help of debut artist Cassandra Diaz creates a new world for people to dream about. Set in the dark backgrounds of the Darkling Realm, the splashes of red and orange make each scene stand out as Seifer goes about his life. Beautifully done, on all accounts.
I love this book so much. Great story with great jokes, you don't lose a beat with the fact that it's a graphic novel. I think that as a graphic novel it makes it better. A good read, one that I have read plenty of times.
So if you're in for winged people, missing royalty, and crotchety old advisors, this book is for you. If not, well you're missing out on this awesome tale.
