Battle System
Space Marine features a fluid combat system that allows players to seamlessly switch from ranged to melee weapons without interrupting the flow of combat. Hitting the melee button at any time will result in a close range strike with the equipped hand-to-hand weapon as well as the camera pulling out to melee distance. Pulling either trigger will instantly snap the view back to behind the player’s shoulder ready for precise shooting. These systems are immediately responsive and leave the player in full control at all times. As the player dispatches enemies in Space Marine they will be earning "Fury" which can be used to unleash devastating ranged or melee attacks. The player can use "Fury Marksman" to enter a heightened form of awareness where time seems to slow down allowing them to pick off multiple ranged enemies in the blink of an eye. Alternately the player can opt to utilize their "Fury Strike" up close and personal with a sweeping area of affect attack that will obliterate anything close enough and knock-back and stun more distant foes.
Key Game Features

- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2011Platform For Display: Xbox 360Verified PurchaseI thought about purchasing Space Marine (SM) for a month or so. I've played several fps (e.g. Red Faction, Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty) and pegged SM as a product at the mid/lower end of the spectrum. Fortunately I was wrong. First I'll discuss my thoughts on the campaign, then I'll address multiplayer.
Normally, I don't care for the campaign aspect of fps, but I could picture myself replaying it after beating it. Some fps games are quite tedious at the hardest levels in terms of remebering to be at a certain location at a certain time with a certain weapon in order to beat the few enemies that prevent you from reaching a checkpoint. SM does a good job at not putting players through this. Instead, success is more a factor of managing larger and larger hordes of enemies rushing you. I prefer this because there's a greater adrenaline rush...the more traditional design feels like I'm playing chess which I find boring.
Multiplayer is always the determining factor on whether I deem a game a good purchase. SM has two game types: annihilation (like 'team deathmatch' in COD) and seize ground (like 'domination' in COD). At first, I thought this was a liability. Then I realized that +90% of online players play these game types anyway. Not only that, but other game types (e.g. Headquarters, Demolition in COD) tend to require higher tactical skill levels, which most players don't exercise, and that results in blowouts more often than not. Getting spawn trapped is mitigated by giving each team a protected respawn area; players have an option to spawn next to other players or at controlled points on map (seize ground only). Weapons have sufficiently large magazines such that in a 1v1 engagement, reloads really aren't necessary before one player is killed. Grenades can't be "cooked", which ends up being a good thing if you don't like to play in a map where you spend most of your time getting killed by grenades...players are typically forced to finish an opponent in a more manly way (shots, or melee). The melee system is good because it isn't "one hit one kill"...also, with the lunge and dodge capability of players, quite a bit of technique is involved in a straight-up melee engagement...also, several melee weapons with various performance parameters are available. Tracking while scoping is also smooth. The perk system is kinda-sorta like COD. However, certain perks are only available for certain classes (3 class-types available, which can be used to create 9 customized characters). I think this is a clever way to ensure that each class type is meant for specific styles of play...otherwise, players could get away with using a "master class" that basically works all then time. Game tempo is great because you have the option of instantly respawning...also, players have unlimited respawns...unlike Gears of War (what a snooze-fest). Maneuver is a big part of the game (thank you!). I think this is the first fps that really got this right. They do this in two ways: 1) players have unlimited sprint capability, 2) jet-packs enable players to cover huge distances. This is fantastic because now every map (big or small) plays with the action of a smaller map. Furthermore, the maps allow many ways to approach an enemy...so campers typically don't last very long as long as players are willing to execute flanking movements.
I could go on, but this is already too much. Overall, great game.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2011Platform For Display: Xbox 360Verified PurchaseSpace Marine is an excellent game in terms of game mechanics, plot and graphics. Though at points the game does feels a little unfinished.
Space Marine uses a unique combination of third person shooter elements combined with an intuitive melee combat system. This mechanic works seamlessly and cannot be overrated. Moving from ranged combat to close combat works better than I have seen in any game I have ever played. Though the game certainly rewards you for getting up close and personal, ranged combat is also highly effective and never feels like an afterthought. Where things still appears a little rough is in terms of the variety of maneuvers. The combat animations, though very cool, do tend to get slightly repetitive. Also, if the attacks had been designed to take more account of the surrounding environment it may have felt a little more interesting. Though I wouldn't advocate for an overly complicated combo system, I think it is possible to add a bit more variety to the melee without overburdening the current system.
The graphics, plot, voice acting, and music are all fantastic. It was especially fun listening to the British Orks, which are such a huge part of the 40K cannon and my personal favorite army. For fans of the table top game I don't think that this game will disappoint in terms of how it brings the 40k world to life. Though I think I did hear one person complain that the Ork blood wasn't green, I don't think most people will have any trouble overlooking this minor change. I did feel that the designers could have made more use of the worlds rich stockpile of vehicles. None of which are actually useable during the campaign or the multiplayer games.
Space Marines only real weaknesses is its lack of multiplayer maps. Though the games are fun and fast paced, the lack of levels and game types has hurt the game and is all that keeps this from being a 5 star review. I do look forward to the co-op multiplayer that I've heard will launch on October 25th, though I find myself sometimes wishing that they had delayed the game until after Christmas and launched with the Co-Op on disc, plus a few more maps. Though I mainly buy games later in their life cycle and perhaps this is coloring my opinion of the game. Usually by the time I pick up a game there are at least a dozen maps available. The four maps that launched with Space Marine are all fantastically designed and well laid out to give all of the various types of marines a part to play. The ability to customize the load out that your marine carries and his appearance account for most of my continued interest in the multiplayer, but I do hope to see some map support in the not too distant future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warhammer 40K: Space Marine
Platform For Display: Xbox 360Verified PurchaseThis is a great game for less than $30. The campaign is on the shorter side but the Warhammer lore is fantastic as is the combat and gameplay. I didn't venture online but most people have no complaints with that aspect of the game. If you can score a copy for under $30 you will enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not too shaby
Platform For Display: Xbox 360Verified PurchaseThis game is actually not bad! There heads are a little out of proportions, but the way you get to curb stomp the orks head is amazing! (Not totally sure if there orks or not :p There is also many other ways you can kill them. Very interesting! This game is pretty awesome but when I look back, I could've waited till it was down to about 40-50. Not 69. Other than that, get it!
