Big tent, solid value, but comes with some challenges

Big tent, solid value, but comes with some challenges
OK in the rain but not greatAwning over front door is nearly useless (too short)The way the front door leans back (like a pyramid) means rain pours straight down through it when you open it.The rain-flap over the door zippers is floppy enough and thin enough that it gets caught in the zipper... kids are constantly calling for helpIt's spacious. At 6'2 I can stand upright in the center of it, but not elsewhere. The ceiling near the ends of it are pretty low, good for stuffing bags but not really usable space, i.e. it's not really 18' because the last 2-3 feet at each end is so low. We use cots, so this is a more pronounced issue because the higher you are from the ground, the further you have to be from the edges. It can be set up by one person, if you're tall enough. See responses to this review for details.Airflow is great, even zipped up.The foot pan wraps up the side of the tent several inches = good.Several mesh pockets keep glasses, phones, etc from getting stepped on or lost in the dark. You get a lot of space for the price but the zipper is truly a hassle, there's no vestibule, no front canopy worth speaking of, and it's not great in steady rain.PROS: Lots of space for walking around, fantastic air flow, stays up. Price, @130. Value is off the charts.CONS: Entry zippers are a real hassle, zippered vents can't be used at night (dew pours in), no vestibule[EDIT UPDATE JUL 2013]It doesn't really leak, but water gets in nonetheless. The pyramid shape means the 'doors' face partially up toward the sky, so rain comes straight in when the door is open. If you're stuck in a long rain, every time someone goes in or out you can get quite a bit of water in the tentThe zippered vents face even more directly upwards and are even more open to rain. To maximize space, there is a tendency to sleep around the perimeter of the room and that puts people right under the zippered vents. Chances are, you're sound asleep when light rain or dew wets part of your sleeping bag (or your laptop, or your clothes). You pretty much have to keep the vents closed at night unless you don't fear rain (or dew) coming in.You can learn to work the zipper... grab it with middle finger and thumb, use your index finger to hold the flap out of the way. This works 9 times out of 10. The trick is teaching your kid's friends how to do it. Zipper works fine from the inside.Despite the zipper vent issue, there is a lot of air flow coming through the screened area under the rainfly. If you tension the tent carefully using the included cords, you can maximize the airflow at this gap.If you get plenty of tension on the rainfly, use all your velcro loops on the fiberglass poles, you can keep the sidewalls of the tent from drooping in, and shrinking the useable space. If you overtension them, the zipper doors won't want to zip.For the price, it's still a great value, even a dozen camping trips later. If I am expecting terrible wet weather (and we're still camping) I will use my other tent (Coleman ARA 6) but normally I use this one because big=comfortable and even in light rain it's nice to have extra space to keep stuff out of the rain[UPDATE SEPT 2013]I ended up making my own vestibule; I really like having a space outside to put a chair where you can sit to put shoes on without getting wet or tracking muddy shoes into the tent. I bought a Kelty Noah's Tarp 9x9 and some poles to make an awning over the entry. Unfortunately the tarp & poles cost about as much as the whole tent.I got tired of trying to stuff it back in it's small bag, bought a 4'x4' mesh bag (made for storing boat covers) to store the tent. You could also use a 4x4 ball bag for like $5.

Great tent for the money, 10 minute setup, 5 minute take down with two people. Sewn in “Fold Here” tabs are great for packing up. Do yourself a favor and get 12 new strong tent stakes more if you wish to replace them all. The ones included are not useful in loose soil conditions. Below is a recap of our first real trip in this tent:

So I finally took this tent from Florida where I live to Northern Michigan for a week’s camping vacation.

The tent is huge, as a 6’2” man I love being able to stand up straight. We pretreated the tent liberally with seam sealer and tested it at home shortly after we got it. Then I sprayed a hose on it a while… leaked like a sieve. I didn’t know what to do here so I just cleaned it up resealed the end that leaked and hoped for no rain on our trip.

This is proof that the tent is great and that the camper was not so. We arrived at our campsite on Lake Huron just before a violent rainstorm. My wife and I got the tent up and threw camp chairs inside to wait it out. As before we had some water leakage on the tents far end. After the rain I went out and saw that the leak was where I’d not stretched the base out fully allowing water to pool on the seam. Making a quick correction was simple and nothing leaked through 4 more rainstorms that week. This family of 4 was very happy the kids slept on the floor and the wife and I slept on cots on either side. We still had room for our camping kitchen to be placed on the back wall thus our cereal stayed dry no matter the weather. The room divider is largely useless and very flimsy; we used it as a sun shield after the second day till the wind sent it into the lake. I don’t think we’ll miss it. The tent has lots of little storage areas tucked in the sides and one overhead. These came in handy in storing flashlights and dirty clothes after a while. The tent got very dirty (sand mostly) but my short wife decided to borrow a broom and got it cleaned out in a few minutes. Windows seemed a little small and the one day it got into the mid 80’s the tent was very warm despite a fair breeze. Therefore we left the doors completely open most of the trip to increase airflow.

Were already planning a winter trip to South Florida. I’ve never tried camping before but since the kids are old enough to enjoy it now I look forward to several more years of trips with this tent.

Set up was quick and easy, by myself. Airflow is great, even with the rain fly on. Spacious, with plenty of windows. Some reviews have complained about the zippers on the door, but I haven't had any issues so far. Most importantly, it's DURABLE...

I committed the cardinal sin of not checking the weather forecast for the night we were going out for a short fishing/camping trip (weather had been bright clear and sunny, high 80 to low 90 all week and the day of). Big mistake. We got hammered pretty good. Kept us dry (once we got the windows zipped), and flexed well with the wind. Our phone gave us a weather alert saying there were 60+ mph winds (typical for an Oklahoma storm). There was a few times the walls blew in on us, but the poles flexed as they should, and handled it like a champ. Impressively, there was no damage whatsoever to the tent when I checked. As far as I'm concerned, the tent has proven itself to me, and o highly recommend it to anybody else looking for a reasonable priced quality tent.

I researched a lot of tents before deciding to buy this one. I knew I wanted something fairly large but I didn't want to spend a ton of money. The Mountain Trails tent fit the bill. Compared to Coleman tents of the same size, this tent is a good $100 less expensive, which makes my wallet happy.
When we got this tent, we practiced setting it up in the yard first. My husband put it up in about 20 minutes, with the "help" of our 4 year old. We were able to take it down (2 adults) in about 5 minutes. When we set it up at the campsite (again, 2 adults), it went up in less than 10 minutes. The rainfly is easy to attach. Like other reviews said, the stakes are cheap and flimsy, but I had anticipated this and bought heavy duty stakes.
We got to test the water-proof feature in our second day of camping. The only leaks were along the seams on the ends. I will be going over those with seam sealer before our next trip. We did lay a tarp down under the tent to prevent water from pooling and to protect the tent floor. I got a $15 tarp that matches the tent footprint at Walmart and it worked very well.
The tent is very spacious. We had a queen size air mattress and a twin size air mattress, a small table and several bags of clothes and gear. There was still plenty of floor space. We really appreciated the size when the rain came in the afternoon. The three of us fit very comfortable and could have spend several hours in the tent if needed without feeling cramped.
My only complaint is that there is no electrical access pocket - which is a feature on many of the Coleman tents. We made do by running an extension cord through the door and zipping up around it (no bugs managed to get in). When it rained, we just put a towel around that area to prevent water seeping in.
There are mats outside the doors, to prevent dirt and mud from being tracked in, but honestly, they didn't do much. We have a carpet remnant that we will be cutting to fit just inside the tent doors - I think this will be a much better solution to keeping the tent as dirt free as possible.
All in all, this was a great purchase. We got a lot of tent for the price and look forward to enjoying it for many camping trips to come.
