Decent crimper for occasional around the house work.
4 out of 5 stars
Decent crimper for occasional around the house work.
I don't do much crimping as a part of my work. Just the odd piece of downspout or ductwork that's been cut to a customer's specifications. For that kind of work, this crimper is fine. As an addition to the toolbox of a handyman, it would be fine. For the professional installing gutters or ductwork, it's probably not going to be an efficient enough tool. As someone else mentioned, it's forte is lighter gauge metals. Fine for the most part with aluminum. Not the greatest for galvanized. It also doesn't cost an arm and a leg.The pictures I'm including are of crimps made on .016 aluminum stock, which could be done fairly easily, albeit rather slowly. I also tried it with some .032 and while it works, it requires a considerable amount of effort to crimp stock that thick. In either case, you wouldn't want to be doing a lot of crimping on a daily basis with this tool. But, as mentioned above, as something for the toolbox for occasional use, it works fine.I'm taking a point off because mine came with a bunch of oily lubricant leaking out of one of the riveted joints, onto the hand grips. It's a sign to me that QC isn't doing their best job of seeing that product going out the door is in the best possible condition. It also required some extra effort on my part to clean it up prior to use.

HURRICANE 5 Blade Sheet Metal Crimper, Hand Crimper for Ductwork, Downspout & Stove Pipe. 9-1/2" Heavy Duty HVAC Sheet Metal Crimping Tool. Ergonomic Downspout Crimper with Safety Lock & Non-Slip Grip

You need this tool when cutting and fitting HVAC Ductwork, Gutter Downspouts, and Stove Pipes. Crimping one end of a pipe, shrinks it so that it will fit inside another pipe. That is how you join pipes together. The tool works well to crimp 22-28 gauge galvanized metal stainless steel, copper, and aluminum.

This hand crimper is really easy to use. I wish I had known about this sooner! I've installed quite a few pieces of pipe, just forcing one cut end into another, without ever thinking there should be a tool to crimp this. It does take a few minutes to work the crimper all around the pipe, but the end result is very good and it makes a proper fit and assembly a breeze.

When my house was built in 1980, the HVAC contractor did a terrible job of installing the duct work. I took it all down and reworked it making sure that every joint was properly sealed and the duct had sufficient insulation and supports. This also involved some custom metal work for replacing the flex duct with metal duct which make a much neater job. Without this specialized tool means having to come up with an alternate method for making those crimps. The time you save and the better the final project makes this tool totally worth it.

This is a review of the HURRICANE 5 Blade Sheet Metal Crimper - Pipe Crimper for Downspout, Stove Pipe, Stainless Steel, Ventilation Duct Systems, 9-1/2" HVAC Crimping Tool.

I received this product free of charge to share my product experiences with Amazon customers to help them make informed buying decisions. This is an honest review from a real person. I didn’t pay for the item, so I will only comment on the apparent quality and utility, not on the value. Prices fluctuate regularly and I always recommend shopping around and comparing what’s available to get your best deal on the date you decide to buy.

I picked up these hurricane brand sheet metal crimpers for small gutter project I was working on where I needed to crimp some downspouts. The first thing I noticed is that these are not of the higher level quality that you'll find in name brands for similar tools. Although they did successfully work for my project I found that they worked better on thinner metals. For example the newer sheet metal I was working with crimped pretty easily with these but when I tried to use them on some of the older slightly thicker downspout material I found it a little more challenging to make good crimps. I think this speaks to the quality of the tool and its construction. There's a lot of play in this tool and sometimes it feels as though it should be crimping tighter than it actually does. If you crimp sheet metal for a living you're going to want to get a better tool, but if you're DIYer handyman they'll work for you. It did get me through my project though so I'm going to give it four stars because at the end of the day it did function for me.

    4 stars.

I rate products according to the following scale:
1 Star: Do not buy. Very poor quality, functionality, or other issues.
2 Stars: Do not buy. Not as bad as a 1 Star, but it still has major downsides.
3 Stars: There are some issues as described in my review. Shop around before you buy
4 Stars: This item met my expectations and functions as intended.
5 Stars: I love this item. It exceeds my expectations for quality and function.

I don't do duct or gutter work very often, but in the past I've used a couple of pairs of needle-nose pliers to try to crimp the end. It's a bit tedious and the end result isn't great, so when I saw this tool on Amazon, I decided to give it a try and was pleasantly surprised.

The tool is very well made. Other reviewers mentioned problems with the safety lock, but I didn't have any problems with it on mine. I did find that the bolt that the lock pushes against can rotate slightly making it a little harder to rotate the lock lever to the lock position. Turning the bolt a few degrees was all that was needed to allow the lever to easily move in and out of the lock position.

As for the crimping operation, it was really pretty easy to do and did a nice clean job, as you can see in the photos.

I'm not sure when I'll next need to use it, but I'm glad I have it on hand, as it does a very nice job.
