    When you start the movie, the frame has been cropped turn the film into a tiny letterbox. I imagine to give the viewer the illusion of widescreen, though very poorly done. At the start, the logo for 20th Century isn't even fully visible. Watching the film via this DVD means you will not see the film in its entirety, as if you are watching with your eyes half closed. DO NOT BUY

    Der etwas in die Jahre gekommene Film, hat in der Tricktechnik neue Tore damals geöffnet. Heute fast schon antik wirkende Technik, hat aber durch die 4K und BR Version in Kino und EXT Version, einen neuen Glanz erfahren.
    Die Schauspielerleistung ist von sehr gut bis hervorragend und das Thema interessant und sehr gut umgesetzt.
    Durch die Bildbearbeitung und den überarbeiteten Ton, hat der Film, wie ich zuvor erwähnte einen Glanz erfahren, welcher ihn sehr zu gute kommt.
    Leider ist der Preis für die Präsentation, in Plastik eine Frechheit. Solche Filme haben ein schönes Steelbook verdient oder mindestens ein Mediabook. Hier wurde aber für den Preis einer angemessenen Präsentation Plastik genommen.
    Warum, können nur die Macher sagen.

    Film 5 Sterne. Bild und Ton 5 Sterne. Preis und Aufmachung 0 Sterne.
    Dem Filmfan, welcher auf die Verpackung kein Wert legt, sollte zugreifen.

    This is a review of the 3 disc German edition. It has the big green FSK 12 classification badge on the lower left of the box (unfortunately this is printed onto both the outer cardboard slipcase and the cover insert inside so you can't just peel off the sticker. So it looks a bit ugly. The wording on the cover and box is in German. However that aside, this is the perfect package for UK viewers. It is full and uncut (including the rat breathing the liquid scene) and all the menus and dialogue (and subtitles if you want) are in English.

    The 4K is on disc 1, the regular Blu-ray edition is on disc 2. Both of these have both the theatrical release and the extended editions. You select which one you wish to watch on the menu. The third disc has the special features: Deep Dive: A Conversation With James Cameron (32:23); The Legacy of the Abyss (24:39); Under Pressure: The Making of The Abyss (59:37); Archives (see below).

    The Archives are the same content as was on the original DVD special edition.

    These really are a treasure trove and well worth the effort to page through them,. They are mostly not videos (there are a few clips), they are generally either pages of text, or some still photos. As an example the Storyboard chapter has all 773 individual storyboard pages, the Costume chapter has about 70 pages of text or photos. The psuedopod chapter is particularly informative with storyboards, test footage, and explanations behind the development of the idea and the realisation of the sequence. The final sequence can be viewed with multiple angles (final/storyboard/rough footage).

    The 4K disc has Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD HR 5.1 audio; the Blu-ray has DTS-HD MA 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0. There are no audio commentaries.

    All the discs are region free (I haven't tested them but the discs and packaging are marked with the ABC all region logo.
