    The Republican-Courier – Findlay, Ohio – Monday, August 29, 1966 – Page 18 RICHARD J. LAUSE LEIPSIC – Richard J. Lause, 65, of Route 2, Leipsic, died at 1:50 p.m. Sunday in Lima St. Rita’s Hospital. Mr. Lause was president of the Putnam County Mutual Fire Insurance Co. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Born April 27, 1901 in Delphos, he was the son of Joseph and Mary (Kroeger) Lause. He married Frances Balbaugh and she survives. Other survivors include sons, Richard Jr. Toledo, and Donald, Leipsic; daughters, Mrs. Joseph Kerner, Louisville, Ohio, and Marilyn, at home; a sister, Mrs. Ben Ruhe, Leipsic, and two grandchildren. Services are at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Nichols Church, the Rev. Carl Willacker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Peoples Funeral home after 7 p.m. Monday. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p m Tuesday in the funeral home.

TR, as he was known, had been Vice-President for 6 months when President William McKinley was assassinated. At age 42, he became the youngest President to serve although John Kennedy, at age 43, was the youngest President elected. He was a popular progressive and was elected to a second term in 1904 as a Republican, winning 56.4% of the popular vote and 336 electoral votes.

In 1915, he was only 14 years old when The Birth of a Nation opened in February. A silent film, it was the most ambitious film to date and is considered a classic. Three hours long, it starred Lillian Gish and was directed by D. W. Griffith. The movie was based on the book The Clansman and told the story of two families (one pro-Union and one pro-Confederate) and their relationship during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The KKK was shown as "a heroic force".
