Nowadays people are calling so many shows a gag comedy that I started to be confused about its real definition.

Now, Nichijou is a perfect example. This is a 100% gag comedy. More importantly, this is how a gag comedy should be like, not a boring beautiful people's club school life anime, full of stereotypes and staleness, featuring 1-3 mediocre jokes per episode, as it's starting to be standard.

Even if it might seem like an endless stream of craziness, it is something much more for people who can really enjoy it.

Well no, not 100%, because pure gag comedy should work anytime anywhere, in Nichijou many gags would only work with those characters. 100% gag comedy is something like Gag Biyori.

It was quite different. It may have been a weird, but, at least it wasn't Bobobo Bo Bo-Bobo weird....

Okay, I might have gone overboard with 100%, but when you ask someone for an iconic gag comedy, they will tell you Gintama or Nichijou, with Gintama being even less % gag comedy given its mixed genres, so I would say Nichijou is a 'poster girl' of gag comedy

Yep, Gyagu Manga Biyori might be the purest anime gag comedy can get, I saw it waay back and enjoyed some of the jokes immensely, but because it's relying purely on gags, it can never get even close to the comedy masterpieces which have that + so much more to offer.

This was supposed to be funny?

The best anime comedy of all time is School Rumble.
This is trash.

Funnier than 90% of all comedies.
School Rumble is genuinely good and funny, but its humour is still a bit infantile, as is obvious from something clearly targeting teenagers.

Giving this a try since I loved Asobi Asobase, and this was reccomeded as similar and a classic.

Only watched the 1st episode so far but...Idk. the weird dead silences and the lack of cohesiveness made this feel like something cooked up by the rejected cartoons guy. Comedy still needs some form of structure I feel like.

I don't hate it, but I hope it grows on me as it goes forward. Asobi Asobase's constant chaos works because it is so driving, keeps up with the ADHD and adrenaline of the viewer. This show so far...is almost unnerving in how much deadspace there is, both in long pauses of action and in random disappearances of background.

I love me some slow paced anime, don't get me wrong, but as of the first episode, I honestly can't at all tell what type of tone this anime is trying to strike. It feels like one of those asdf cartoons or a pop tarts commercial, and the lack of any cohesion between sketches makes it almost feel like this was based on several different 4-kon manga, instead of one in particular.

Don't hate it though, and will keep going. Just hope it picks a tone going forward and enjoys itself enough to actually fill the dead space with something, even atmosphere, instead of blank silence and blank screen.

Hey, just wanna say, I'm 6 episodes in now, and I don't think I have ever had a more wrong first impression of a show before.

This rules.
