I also liked the first episode... a lot actually... I'm the kind of person who has to look away at (heavy) gore scenes (like the thumbs to eyes) but other than that I was fine.
The atmosphere of the first ep was really good and I can't await the next ep!
Something about this reeks. Perhaps many things. So... seinen. Good start. I start watching it.
(EP 1 spoilers obviously)
Thrown into a pointless, short expo on the main character and his retarded achievements in the war. Which some old man is randomly prattling about, just to give clarify the background of our now panhandling MC (god I hate intros like this. I hate seeing characters introduced by another throwaway character like this. Hate it. Just what the fuck can you people figure out some other way to do this?). Who just happens to be the quest starter for a string of coincidences so contrived that I have to wonder if the theme of this is "series of ridiculously connected events" more than anything else. Girl just unconditionally helps him while pointlessly going on about her culture as if speaking to a person that's already her friend. Cue a really rushed and generic journey start....
Well hopefully the next few episodes get better. So far I'm not particularly enthralled by the plot or much of anything else. It feels like a really half assed attempt to rope in audiences that aren't satisfied with the current thematic (and genre) status quo in anime productions.
Actually its pretty interesting, like I learnt a lot about the Ainu culture and about survival knowledge.
In a way its like a very interesting upscale NatGeo alike program.
And I like how the plot is moving too. Nice pace, nice direction
1. Heavy plot and so far it's half road trip, half treasure hunt, and all fun.
2. I was not sure until episode 3 if it was going to catch me but it has. I am thinking it's going to be pretty well received, even if the 3d animals and such are offputting.
3. I love the characters. But the development arc is too easy to telegraph.
The show also works as a light action-adventure story. There are not many series like this these days, although direction could be better and the presentation of Ainu culture is at times too heavy-handed.
My list included three items. Two of which I found disturbing. And, one of the three, I knew others would find disturbing. So I listed all three.
@offkorn I'm sorry, was that too witty for you? Did you seriously fail to comprehend what I said? I ask this because it's important to everything else I said.
*snipping giant essay that nobody cares about*
It's funny that you told the troll to take it somewhere else (although that was even too much of a reponse) and then you still fell for the bait and wrote a long essay about why the troll is a dumbdumb and you are superior. You fell for it hook, line, and sinker. This is EXACTLY the kind of response trolls want. The only way you should respond to an obvious bait post is to ignore it. "Acknowledging" the troll by saying "I know you are trolling, go away" only signals that you are a juicy target because you can't help but respond to the initial bait.
Anyway, this show is one of only 2 or 3 I can even stomach this season. Ugh.
Something different, and now they throw in a serial killer in the mix. Amazing use of violence. The art style reminds me of Vinland Saga, I haven't looked up the manga so I'm not sure if it's the same creator.

I'm so glad that I didn't drop the show because of the terrible CGI bears and wolves. The episodes give the currently unfolding events in the manga so much background which I have already forgotten from reading them way back when.
Does anyone else feel that the series could be better with proper direction and production values? I am starting to get bored and neither the action scenes, the adventures or the bland humor are getting through to me.

Something is definitely off. Episode 10 felt misplaced with its weird humor. I dunno, hadn't taken this series for a comedy series before this episode and therefore didn't know whether I could laugh or shouldn't because of some incoming twist. Plus, the humor made it feel irrelevant to the plot, basically this series' beach episode. Also they have only like 3(?) out of 35(?) parts? How will they wrap this even up in the remaining episodes.
And episode 11 is now a run-of-the mill mystery house plot? At this point it basically feels episodic.
But Asirpa would make an awesome waifu. I really hope she would get that horrid face tatoo , but it really seems to be a real thing ... just as the bears are(?):
In the first place, the Ainu motif is quite interesting. The first time I encountered "Ainu" was when they explained the word "Kamuy" in X the Movie, but I never had a real feel what the Ainu were since then 10 years ago.
The adaption itself may not be that fantastic, but it was good enough for me. Loved every second of the show.
Hopefully the cgi will be replaced for BD/DVD and no cgi for the second season but at least it wasn't omnipresent.
Personally I perceived the show from the beginning as an very episodic show with lots of comedy.
