The Westbrook Residence designed by Alterstudio Architecture, offers a fresh perspective on suburban architecture in Austin, Texas, presenting a design approach that respects the area’s history while adapting to its evolving character. Situated in a post-war neighborhood where many homes push the limits of floor area ratio through oversized additions or new constructions, this 3,494 square foot home maintains a modest and unassuming presence. Its thoughtful design balances the scale of the neighborhood, providing a modern take on suburban living without overshadowing its surroundings.

By preserving a lower ratio of building to garden, the residence fosters a deeper connection to nature. The home is thoughtfully positioned to allow its inhabitants to engage with multiple gardens that surround the structure, creating an environment where indoor and outdoor spaces coexist harmoniously.

A Composition of Volumes

The design centers around four masonry volumes that come together to frame a central living area, which connects to the outdoor gardens. The public spaces within the home are defined as transitional zones, featuring floor-to-ceiling, site-glazed windows under a continuous ceiling. The masonry volumes, constructed with limestone bricks and steel-framed openings, introduce a sense of privacy.

Above the main living spaces, a steel-clad volume incorporates light chimneys, introducing soft, natural illumination and unexpected views. The interaction between the enclosed masonry rooms and the open, fluid public areas creates a spatial contrast that allows for a versatile living experience.

Balancing Intimacy and Openness

The Westbrook Residence offers two distinct interior experiences: the enclosed masonry rooms provide quiet, intimate spaces, while the open, flowing public areas connect to the outdoors. This duality gives the home a unique ability to accommodate different moods and activities, blending elements of pre-modern and modern living.

The thoughtful layout encourages residents to engage with both the interior and exterior environments. Each space is crafted to respond to the surrounding gardens, allowing the family to feel immersed in nature while enjoying the comfort of their home.

Designed for Longevity

With its single-story layout and reasonable size, the residence is designed to support the family’s needs over time. This makes it an ideal space for aging in place. Its proximity to neighbors and the amenities of Austin improves the sense of community. The integration of nature into the living experience further promotes well-being. As the neighborhood continues to evolve, new homes are replacing older structures. The Westbrook Residence stands as a thoughtful model for future development.
