This week we’re switching things up and focusing on moments in the news that caught our eye, kept us informed, lightened the mood, and made us laugh.

Making Good As hospitals face terrifying shortages of necessary equipment, small business, sewing clubs, and individuals are pitching in to help hospitals during this critical time. You can support the effort by donating to crowdsourcing efforts, joining the sewing movement, and even 3D-printing masks.

The Fight for Sick Pay Continues As service workers continue to be on the front line of the pandemic, many are fighting for support. Ride-share drivers are acting as first responders, often without health insurance; Amazon workers feel unprotected and underpaid; UPS employees are given only unpaid leaves of absence; and Instacart workers are planning to strike for hazard pay and access to hand sanitizer.

4 Helpful Things for This Weird-Ass Time This story on The Atlantic on the end of the pandemic and this one from The Harvard Business Review both helped me make some sort of sense of the world this week. Waking up to Poem a Day has been soothing. And if you'd like to get in on a feel-good activity, in a show of support, New Yorkers will be clapping for essential workers tonight at 7 p.m.

For Those Fortunate Enough to Work Remotely Whether you're new to the work-from-home game or a seasoned veteran, odds are you are spending a lot of time videoconferencing right now. Luckily, many folks are getting into the video background game! West Elm, Hygge & West, One Fine Stay, and BEHR have all created interesting backgrounds for delighting and potentially confusing your coworkers on future calls.

Happy Friday, everyone. Stay healthy, stay hopeful.
