Located in Vikhroli, Mumbai, this 1,100 square-foot home by Tanushree Lakhotia—founder of LimeHouse Design Studio—celebrates rich textures and powerful colourways that help achieve balance and create intriguing contrasts. The home is filled with comfortable, well-lit, airy spaces injected with statement-making hues, hence the name, The House of Colour.
“Breaking away from light and minimalist design trends, this apartment carries a vivacious and free spirited vibe and translates into an exquisite, colourful and inviting home full of life and character. All the spaces feature clean-lined, functional furniture,” says Lakhotia.

A muted colour palette of neutrals and warm hues, the wooden flooring marks the entryway to the home. The design grammar coalesces contemporary with traditional, and is interspersed with hints of green from biophilia and a riot of colours from the artwork. A wooden screen with shelves demarcates the foyer from the living and dining area.
The foyer leads to the open-plan living and dining room that carefully balances bold hues juxtaposed against warm wood accents and indoor plants. This area has a neutral base palette offset by beautifully matching or clashing hues. An expansive window swathes this space with natural light resulting in a lively, joyous and colour-filled home with an enviable personality.
“We focussed on colourful accents, which can easily be updated and maintained. A bar right next to this seating occupies a prime spot offering a sublime view of the lovely green mangroves. No surprises on which is the most sought after lounging area in this high-rise apartment,” says Lakhotia.

On the far end of the living area is the parents’ room, which is done up in an elegant and classic style. It gives continuity to the underlying theme of this bold and classy home with a vibrant green headboard. However, the rest of the room carries a light and minimalist look that lets the neutral undertones shine.
In the son’s bedroom, the gentle neutral foreground of greys offset with vibrant yellows and blues add an element of fun and lightness to the decor. Even though this room had the least square footage, the designers were able to convert it into a multi-functional space to comfortably fit a day-bed, a folding bed, a study and a reading nook.
The main bedroom is a vibrant yet comforting space with an elevated platform bed that has wooden steps. An expansive wardrobe running along an entire wall offers this room functional storage and a stylish edge. In tune with the client’s requirements, a large part of the room is kept open and free-flowing.
