Campbeltown Regeneration

From 2007-2020 Argyll and Bute Council working in partnership with the community, private and social enterprise sector delivered an extensive programme of heritage led regeneration in Campbeltown town centre.

The £10million programme included:

  • 2007-12 - Campbeltown Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) Round 1
  • 2009-15 - Campbeltown Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI)
  • 2015-20 - Campbeltown Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) Round 6

The main aim was to provide a sustainable economic future for Campbeltown, making it an attractive place to live, work, visit and invest.

157 grants totalling £3.25million were awarded leading to repairs on over 40 buildings.  The remainder was secured from private owners and external funders including; Historic Environment Scotland; Heritage Lottery, National Lottery and many others.

Over 2,000m2 of vacant floorspace was brought back into use. This included; Campbeltown Town Hall, Campbeltown Backpackers bunkhouse, a four star hotel and several derelict tenements that now provide good quality residential accommodation and commercial space, increasing the vibrancy of the town centre.

For more information about the projects that we have funded see our Completed Projects, or take a look at our Regeneration map to see where development has taken place.

In 2019-20 we delivered a shopfront improvement scheme in Campbeltown as part of the Town Centre Fund.

In addition to this we provided support to Campbeltown Community Business with the £3million restoration of Campbeltown Picture House.

To help owners look after their property, our Maintenance Advice section has tips and advice on keeping buildings wind and watertight.
