International Ataxia Awareness Day (IAAD) is on September 25th of each year. It is a coordinated effort from individuals and Ataxia organizations around the world to help shed light on this rare disease. NAF is committed to leading the way on this outreach effort – but we need your help! We encourage individuals and disease organizations to join us by planning events and/or awareness campaigns for IAAD.
IAAD is a great time to start up Ataxia advocacy initiatives. Join our Hill Day event to help get the day declared as National Ataxia Awareness Day or get a proclamation for IAAD in your city or state. Instructions that explain the process are included in the downloads below. Visit our advocacy page for more info about ongoing initiatives.
We invite you to join NAF and FARA in raising awareness about Ataxia and supporting legislation that directly impacts our communities. United Against Ataxia Hill Day is scheduled in September each year. A group of advocates will meet with Congressional Members to discuss issues important to the Ataxia community. It will be a virtual event so every US resident, regardless of where you are, can participate. There is no cost or need to travel. Instead, you can speak to your Congressional Members right from the comforts of your home!
An easy way to help with Ataxia awareness is using social media. You can post a personal story or information about Ataxia to help with the awareness efforts. NAF offers social media post ideas and images. Use #IAAD24 for your social media posts to help International Ataxia Awareness Day trend on social media! Follow NAF on Facebook and Twitter to share our IAAD messages.
A great way to spread awareness is to encourage people to learn about Ataxia. The best way to help others understand something that they are unfamiliar with is to allow them to ask questions. For IAAD, we’re starting an “Ask Me About Ataxia” movement! Post a photo of yourself or your group with a sign that says, “Ask Me About Ataxia.” Our goal is to get a conversation started. If you give your friends and followers the opportunity to ask questions – you never know how many people you might reach! Share what you know about Ataxia and your experiences.
Tag us on social media or submit your photos to [email protected]. We will post your photos during our IAAD campaign throughout the month of September.
Feel free to use our printable signs for your photos!

Walk N’ Roll is NAF’s largest grassroots fundraising campaign. Walk N’ Roll began in 2007. It is held in cities across the United States. Thousands of families, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and communities come together each year to support NAF’s mission to accelerate the development of treatments and improve the lives of people living with Ataxia.
