Story
Julius Caesar has been assassinated. A nation is in mourning. Revenge will be bloody... Rome's great hero has been brutally murdered by his most trusted allies. While these self-appointed Liberatores seek refuge in the senate, they have underestimated one man: Caesar's adopted son Octavian, a man whose name will echo through history as Augustus Caesar. Uniting with his great rival Mark Antony, Octavian will stop at nothing to seek retribution and avenge his father's death.

Narrator crucifies story
Reviewed: 13-02-22
The audio is of poor quality. The volume washes up and down which gets very annoying. It is as if the narrator is turning his head away from the microphone and back repeatedly. The amateurish style of narration spoils the story even more. Michael Healy is just reading and not acting the parts – something anyone of us could do.
Conn Iggulden's stories of Ceasar have been very enjoyable and brought that time to life in my imagination. But I think volume 5 is better read than listened to.
It pains me to leave a negative review but Audible should be ashamed of themselves for the quality of the production and for selling it to their members.

A story that stays long after you've finished it.

Good story, believable, well written and well read. Not only has the author done a stunning job, but so has the narrator. I hope someone makes a film of it and does it justice.

Story
The Wopuld family built their fortune on a board game called Empire, now a wildly successful computer game. So successful, in fact, that the American Spraint Corp wants to buy the Wopulds out. Alban, who has been evading the family tentacles for the last few years, thinks Spraint should be treated with suspicion, but he also has other things on his mind. What, for example, drove his mother to take her own life?

Surprised by how much I enjoyed this book

Would you listen to The Steep Approach to Garbadale again? Why?
I'd give it a few years and listen to it again.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The grandmother - could picture her so well.
What about Peter Kenny’s performance did you like?
Well cast for the narration - he put definition into the characters and his voice is easy on the ear
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes but one has to live a little too.
Any additional comments?
After listening to the Wasp Factory, I was wary of Iain Banks's warped imagination. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this story. He might have been warped but he also had a keen eye for human nature and brought his characters to life without making them clichéd.
