Yamaha Free Go unveiled

Japanese brand targets family buyers in Indonesia with the new 125cc scooter.

Yamaha has launched the new Free Go family-oriented 125cc scooter in the Indonesian market. The Free Go is manufactured and marketed by group company PT Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing (YIMM), which targeting sales of over 1 lakh units in the first year of sales.

Apart from the standard model, the Free Go I variant gets equipped with additional features such as a stop-start system, smart key and ABS. The standard two-wheeler retails for 1,85,00,000 rupiah (Rs 89,488), while the top-spec Free Go I has been priced at 2,25,00,000 rupiah (Rs 1.09 lakh).

The new scooter is powered by the company’s Blue Core 125cc engine, which produces 9.4hp and 9.5Nm of torque. The Free Go has been developed based on what Yamaha says is the concept of a ‘compact scooter for family comfort’, and balances elegant styling with highly-usable, practical performance.

The Yamaha Free Go sports an external fuel-filler cap, which is positioned below the handlebar. Since the fuel tank is located under the floorboard, underseat capacity is a generous 25-litre. Other notable features include an all-digital LCD screen, a 720mm-long seat, LED headlight and mobile charger.

Yamaha bullish on scooter market

As in India, scooters are an immensely popular mode of transportation and account for an overwhelming 83 percent of the Indonesian two-wheeler market, which is among the largest in the world. Approximately, 5.8 million two-wheelers were sold in the Indonesian market last year, of which the scooter market accounts for approximately 4.8 million units or nearly 83 percent.

Will the Free Go come to India?

Like the Indonesian market, scooters are very popular in India and recent months have shown a growing preference for higher-powered 125cc premium scooters. Honda, with its Grazia; TVS Motor, with its, Ntorq 125; Suzuki, with the Access 125; and, more recently, Hero MotoCorp, with its Destini 125; are all fighting for honours in the fast-growing 125cc scooter market in India.
