Microsoft 365 Email Security
Your business uses Microsoft 365 email every day.
You depend on its features to communicate with employees, vendors, and customers.
Have you considered the security that comes with Microsoft 365 email may not be enough?
In this blog, we’re taking a look at the most common email threats, as well as ways the BahatiTech Ninja’s can help protect your emails against these threats.
COMMON THREATS
- Spoofing
Spoofing is a method used in many types of cybercrime, and involves creating false data and information that appears legitimate, such as an email address.
Fraudsters who impersonate big name brands like Apple, Netflix, Microsoft, and Samsung, for example, use spoofing.
The FBI recorded more than 25,000 incidents of spoofing last year, with losses of $300 million.
- Spam
Spam is unwanted messages that typically advertise “must-see” products and services.
According to Statista, about 60% of the world’s email traffic volume is spam.
One issue with spam is that it clogs mailboxes with junk mail, resulting in reduced mailbox storage, not to mention wasted time and productivity. Spam is also used to spread threats like trojans, ransomware and other types of malware.
- Phishing
Phishing is an attack or threat that uses fraudulent messages to steal money and valuable information, such as bank account, credit cards, and credentials details. This data is then used to commit fraud.
According to the FBI, phishing resulted in more than 114,000 reported cases in 2019.
- Business Email Compromise (BEC)
BEC is an advanced type of phishing, also known as CEO fraud. In this type of fraud, the hacker impersonates an employee, director, or president of the company to commit crimes, with the goal of stealing money or confidential information, or distributing malware.
FBI data points out that, in 2019, BEC attacks caused losses of $1.7 billion, topping the list of email threats that cause the highest financial losses.
- Ransomware, trojan and other malware
Malware (malicious software) is device software that aims to cause damage and steal data. Ransomware and trojan malware are commonly used in email attacks.
In email scams, malware is always hidden in malicious links and attachments that look legitimate and reliable.
According to a Verizon report, 17% of data breach cases involve malware. Of this percentage, 27% involve the use of ransomware, and more than 15% involve the use of trojan.
Trojans are a particularly dangerous type of malware because they give the hacker full access, including the ability to view your passwords and logins, and even hijack your webcam.
- Botnet and DDoS
A botnet is a group of machines or devices connected to the internet that has been infected with malware and is controlled by a hacker.
Botnets are widely used in massive spam and phishing campaigns.
In addition, botnets are also used in DDoS attacks (Distributed Denial-of-Service attack), which are attempts to overload systems, interrupting the provision of services, causing losses, and opening loopholes for other types of threats.
