Cincinnati Bengals add 3 coaches to their staff, including 3 former coordinators

The Ravens, as we know, are constantly looking to add new coaches and more experience to their coaching staff. Former Head Coaches like Jim Caldwell, Steve Spagnoulo, Al Saunders, Gary Kubiak, Marc Trestman, and now Leslie Frazier have all been on the Ravens coaching staff following head coaching gigs in the NFL.

So it is not surprising that the division rival Bengals, long thought of as the little brother to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ravens has adopted the same practice. Although the Bengals have had recurring regular season success over the past 5+ seasons, making the playoffs for 5 consecutive seasons, they have yet to get over the hump to win a playoff game. The Ravens and Steelers each have won a Super Bowl in the past 10 years, and both feature quarterbacks with impressive playoff resumes. With quarterback Andy Dalton having his best season before he got injured, and a well rounded roster, the Bengals are smart to take any advantage they can find to help them get over the hump.

The Bengals added Kevin Coyle, Bill Lazor, Jacob Burney, and Jim Haslett to their staff. Haslett is a former head coach as well as coordinator, and both Coyle and Lazor are coming from the Miami Dolphins were they served as Defensive and Offensive coordinators respectively.

Coyle, who previously served on the Bengals staff from 2001 through 2010, was the Dolphins defensive coordinator for the past 3 seasons. He returns to replace Vance Joseph as the defensive backs coach, after Joseph ironically was hired as defensive coordinator for the Dolphins under new head coach Adam Gase.

Bill Lazor, a longtime quarterbacks coach in the NFL who was the offensive coordinator for the Dolphins for the past two seasons, comes to the Bengals to be the quarterbacks coach, after the Bengals announced former quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese as the new offensive coordinator.

Jim Haslett fills the role of linebackers coach after Matt Burke left with Joseph to work under him in Miami. Haslett, who was the Head Coach of the New Orleans Saints from 2000 to 2005, has also served as defensive coordinator for 4 different NFL teams over the past 22 years, most recently the Washington Redskins from 2010 to 2014.

Jacob Burney, a 21 year NFL veteran was hired as defensive line coach. Burney most recently held the same role with the Redskins.
