CHAPTER 1
This is Lex. Lex is smart and brave. She builds tall towers and trains wild animals. With the help of her teddy bear, named Courage, she even rescues Mommy from scary spiders.
But what no one else knows is that Lex has a little monster that lives in her closet. It is a secret.
At first, Lex and the secret monster have lots of fun together. At night, they sneak around the house and play games. They eat cookies and go on pretend adventures.
Every night before the monster leaves, he says, "Don't tell anyone I am here ... especially your mommy and daddy. If you tell, we can't play anymore. It's a secret!" and Lex promises she won't tell.
The next night, the secret monster comes back again, but this time he's grown bigger! This time, the monster is not as nice.
He wants to play rough games, say naughty words, and watch scary movies. Lex wants to say no, but she doesn't want to make the monster angry.
Lex is not having fun.
Before the monster leaves, he says, "Don't tell anyone I am here ... especially your mommy and daddy. 1f you tell, your mommy and daddy will be so mad about the fun we are having. 1t's a secret!"
"I won't tell ...," says Lex, but she doesn't like the monster anymore.
Lex tells Courage that she is sad. Courage thinks that Lex should tell Mommy and Daddy, but Lex is too scared that she will get in trouble.
"I don't want Mommy and Daddy to be mad at me ..," she tells Courage.
The next night, the monster comes out again. This time the monster has grown really big and scary! Lex is afraid and doesn't want to play with the monster anymore. But the Monster is soooo big and mean.
Lex begins to cry. "What should I do?" Lex asks Courage.
