Grant and New Guy will be chiming in soon with their full recaps of BC's wins in hockey and baseball, respectively, but I wanted to give a shout out to a tremendous day for Boston College athletics, from start to finish.
Headlining it all, of course, was the Boston College men's hockey team's 5-3 win at Vermont, handing the Eagles the Hockey East regular season championship. Johnny Gaudreau extended his point streak to 26 games with another goal, and BC remained unbeaten since the Holy Cross game.
A few hours prior to the men's game, and five hours to the east, the Boston College women's hockey team continued its strong second half with a 4-1 win over Maine in Orono. Haley Skarupa scored again for the BC women, who are also in position to wrap up some hardware this weekend. With a win tomorrow afternoon in Maine, the Eagles will clinch their first ever Hockey East women's regular season title.
The women's lacrosse team opened their season and ACC play with a rivalry game against Notre Dame and got the job done, winning 15-10 on the strength of six goals by junior Mikaela Rix.
The women's tennis team got into the action with a 5-2 win at Harvard, snapping the Crimson's six match home winning streak. The Eagles have won five straight to start 2014.
Boston College baseball bounced back from their season-opening loss with a pair of much needed wins, winning both ends of a doubleheader against Santa Clara (4-1) and Nevada (7-3) to go to 2-1 on the weekend. They have a winning record right now - no small thing after the drudgery of last season. I hope they enjoy it and build off of it.
While the softball team couldn't make it an undefeated day, losing in their first of two games on the day 9-1 to Memphis, BC blanked Valparaiso 4-0 in the nightcap to make it a very good day all around.
You can't help but think Boston College teams nationwide are playing with extra motivation this weekend for their departed friend Dick Kelley.
While there's not much left to play for in men's basketball this year, let's hope that his favorite team and his life's passion can round out the weekend with a win over Notre Dame tomorrow at home.
With women's hockey, baseball, softball, and the women's hoops team all playing as well, it has the potential to be another big day.
