Create curls and waves with hair curlers
Hair curlers are the easiest method to gently create curls and waves in straight hair. Before hair is put in curlers, a curl spray should be applied in order to give the hair some additional grip and hold, so the curls will hold longer.
With regular hair rollers, the damp hair is being put in curlers from the tip to the root. Self-grip and Velcro self-holding curlers stay in the hair on their own, but velvet curlers or volume rollers need to be fastened in place with a pin or special rubber band.
When the curlers are in the hair, the hair is dried with the help of a drying hood or a blow dryer. When the hair is fully dry and cooled down, the curlers are carefully removed from the hair and finger styled to achieve the desired look. In order to make the curls last longer, they can be set with the help of hairspray.
Which curlers are the best?
Which curlers really are the best, depends on the desired results. The first choice that has to be made is between classic curlers that are used together with a drying hood or blow dryer and hot rollers. Hot rollers or hot curlers have the advantage that they dry the hair from the inside out and therefore are able to create very defined and long-lasting curls. What has to be kept in mind with hot rollers is that they need a few minutes to be ready to use as they have to heat up before being used. The strongly defined curls can also look less natural, compared to curls created with other types of rollers.
Self-gripping curlers stay in the hair on their own and create very soft, natural looking types of curls. Perm rods are being used for permanent waves. Metal- or wire-curlers are the cheapest option and can be heated up with the heat of a hairdryer. Velvet curlers are gentle to the hair but slip out of the hair easier than other curlers. The choice of the perfect hair curler depends strongly on personal preference and the desired results, as different types of curlers achieve different results.
