What Is Hot Buttered Rum?

Our classic hot buttered rum recipe is made with rum, butter, hot water, brown sugar, and vanilla. First you'll beat the butter, sugar, and spices together until well combined. Next you'll bring your water to a boil and add the rum. Top with a generous scoop of the butter mixture and finish with fluffy whipped cream. Our recipe testers loved the warm spice flavor and richness from the butter.

Tips for Making Hot Buttered Rum

As you make this hot buttered rum recipe, keep these helpful tips in mind.

  • When testing the recipe, we used Meyers dark rum and loved the pronounced rum flavor in the finished cocktail.
  • If you don't have pumpkin pie spice, this recipe would also be great with apple pie spice or a combination of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, or ginger.
  • It's not a requirement to serve the drink in a clear mug, but it does show off the layers of the cocktail and whipped cream beautifully.
  • We used unsalted butter for this recipe and found it had the best flavor.
