On April 15, 1865, the day after President Lincoln's assassination, a group of Springfield citizens, learning that the body would be returned to Illinois for burial, formed the National Lincoln Monument Association and spearheaded a drive for funds to construct a memorial/tomb.

Lincoln Home National Historic Site preserves the Springfield, Illinois home and related historic district where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1844 to 1861, prior to becoming the 16th president of the United States.

The tomb’s interior is comprised of a monument that marks the location of Lincoln’s burial vault. Nine State flags that are associated with the President and his family surround the monument.
