Thanks for your comments - I agree that higher IF usually correlates with higher expectations / additional experiments. Although I have heard that eLife typically either accepts or rejects without asking for major experiments.

Mar 20, 2019 · I have a 1st author and a last author there. Both took a reasonable amount of time (maybe 4 months total), but this isn't an uncommon length of time for any journal with an impact factor >15. That's just how long these journals take. I've had papers in Nature Genetics that took about this long, and one each in Science and in Cancer Cell.

Feb 25, 2022 · An impact factor of 5 can be considered high if it's a very niche field, it's based almost entirely off of how often studies from that journal get cited. The more niche the field, the less likely that is to happen just because fewer people are working in that area that are actually going to reference that journal/paper.

May 3, 2024 · Nat Chem Bio is the "better" journal in the sense that it is more specialized towards a particular topic, whereas nat comm is mostly a collection of papers from all disciplines that didn't make it into the higher impact nature journals.

Sep 16, 2023 · Objectively, Nature Communications is better than PNAS now. Nat Comms is more demanding, has higher standards, higher impact factor, and growing prestige. PNAS is an excellent journal, but its prestige has been steadily declining in the last 20 years.

Jan 19, 2023 · I’m not really familiar with JCI but its impact factor is similar to nature comms, so overall popularity of the journals are probably comparable. One thing to consider is that JCI will reach more clinical researchers while I’d bet nature comms will reach more of the basic science/preclinical people.

So the 2023 impact factor (which is released in 2024, just to make things more confusing) would be 10,000/480 = 20.8 Easy peasy. BUT, it doesn’t really tell the entire story. First, papers can still be cited after that year window. Some papers take a while to get recognition. Too bad, they don’t count towards the impact factor.

It really depends on the field. Generally speaking, the higher the journal impact factor, the more prestigious the journal is, but many would argue that impact factor doesn't reflect the whole story. But on the top of my head, in my field (Condensed Matter Physics), the some of top journals are: Physical Review B. Physical Review Applied
