The Zambezi Region is one of Namibia's fourteen regions, situated in the north-eastern part of the country along the Zambezi River. The region's capital is Katima Mulilo. The Katima Mulilo Airport is 18 kilometres south-west of the town, while the village of Bukalo is located 43 kilometres south-east of Katima Mulilo. [5]

The Zambezi Region (formerly Caprivi Strip) is a little-visited narrow strip of land in northeastern Namibia that borders Botswana’s Okavango Delta. There are three off-the-beaten-track national parks here: Bwabwata, Nkasa Rupara (formerly Mamili) and Mudumu.

The Zambezi (also spelled Zambeze and Zambesi) is the fourth-longest river in Africa, the longest east-flowing river in Africa and the largest flowing into the Indian Ocean from Africa. Its drainage basin covers 1,390,000 km 2 (540,000 sq mi), [4][5] slightly less than half of the Nile 's.

For most travellers, the Zambezi serves as the easiest access route connecting Namibia with Victoria Falls and Botswana’s Chobe National Park. In a land of contrasts, the Zambezi Region adds an equatorial swelter to Namibia’s already packed buffet of climates.

The Zambezi Region is Namibia’s bird paradise. It has varied habitats including broad-leafed and acacia woodlands, mopane forests, riverine forests, grasslands and floodplains, and therefore boasts more than 400 species of birds.

Although narrow, with a maximum north-south width of 65 miles, this colonial-era oddity, created to give German-administered South West Africa access to the River Zambezi, is packed with national parks, game reserves, and conservancies.
