Heavy traffic is expected at one of the busiest junctions of the M6 today.

Roadworks are expected to close the southbound slip road at junction 5 of the motorway for nearly six months after work got underway yesterday (Sunday, January 10).

Highways England say the route is set to be closed for 25 weeks.

The northbound slip road at the same junction is also expected to be closed overnight for one week from today (January 11)/

The work was originally planned to start last March but was postponed because of other projects over-running .

Diversions are in place with drivers encouraged to take the A38 through Minworth to junction 9 of the M42 for all those wanting to travel either north or south on the motorway.

Those travelling in either direction of the M6 are being urged to travel on the A38 to junction 6 of the motorway.

The maps and video below show the diversions recommended by Highways England.

And meanwhile maintenance will also continue at junction 6 of the M6 at the A38M Aston Expressway and Spaghetti Junction where repair work is now not likely to finish until spring.

A project to replace waterproofing on the M6 Gravelly Hill Interchange began in January and was initially scheduled to finish last July. But the Highways Agency found erosion, including rods supporting concrete, required additional work.

Parts of Birmingham city centre are also shut to traffic as part of the £500 million Paradise Circus improvement scheme.
