During 2023, it has become clearer that nuclear power will need to play an increasingly important role in the green maritime transition, either with onboard reactors or by land-based reactors producing green synthetic fuels.

Last year, the GCE Blue Maritime Cluster conducted a study to map the forefront of commercial nuclear activities in the maritime industry. The study concluded that the ongoing projects within the cluster are globally well-positioned and receive significant attention.Hence, this day will build much on the seminar from last year by:

  • giving an update of the Norwegian projects.
  • looking in detail of what is needed in Norway to move the technology forwarded.
  • giving an update of global development, both in terms of projects and regulations.

PROGRAM:

09.30 - 10.00 - Registration and Coffee

10.00 - 11.30 - Part 1 - Regulatory and political developents

Lloyds Register | TBA

With their deep insight and experience on the topic, Lloyds Register will be back to tell you about the latest global status, as well as first-hand experience on today’s sailing vessels.

Norsk Kjernekraft | Håvard Kristiansen

Norsk Kjernekraft is working to commercialize Nuclear Power on land in Norway. Recently, they have done a study describing today’s possibilities and main barriers for the use of Nuclear Power in Norway - and what can be done to speed up the process.

DNV | Eirik Ovrum

DNV recently issued their Forecast for 2050, where they through a case study analyze nuclear propulsion. The study suggests that nuclear propulsion, in a mid- and longterm perspective, can play a valuable role in the green maritime transition.

11.30-12.15 - Lunch

12.15-15.00 - Part 2 - Status of domestic and international projects

NTNU | NUPROSHIP | Jan Emblemsvåg

Jan Emblemsvåg, professor at NTNU, is leading the Nuproship project and will give his latest update on the project. In addition, the project and NTNU is planning an international nuclear conference in Ålesund, this year in June.

Ulstein Design | Thor | Øyvind Kamsvåg

Ulstein is continuing to develop the Thor and other nuclear concepts that could change international shipping in the future.

Core Power | Tobi Meniez (Digital)

With offices in UK, USA and Janpan, Core Power provides marine engineering and co-funds developments of advanced nuclear energy technologies which are appropriate for maritime use. (Digital)

Lucid Cathalysts | Chirayu Batra - CTO (Digital)

LucidCatalyst is a highly specialized international consultancy and with offices in US and UK, their mission is to accelerate affordable decarbonization and universal access to clean modern energy.

Chirayu has previously led the planning, organising and implementing several IAEA’s activities and projects in the field of Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and their applications, including their coupling with renewable and non-electric applications.

IFE/GCE Blue Maritime Cluster | TBA

Can New Nuclear Technologies fit in the vessels of the cluster? Together with IFE we are launching a New report on new technologies fitting into the vessels of the cluster
