Good morning! Today my boy and I are excited to share with you a fun Christmas kid craft and gift idea: Christmas Paint Pen Mugs. You may recall the Halloween Paint Pen Plates that we did a couple of months ago. He had so much fun making them that he has been asking to make more “art dishes” ever since. This was his lucky week!
We used mugs from the dollar store and Elmer’s Painters paint pens to make these adorable mugs. The project was super simple to set up, complete and clean up, which is always great for moms! I think they will make adorable gifts for his grandparents, don’t you? I think I will pair them with some hot cocoa mix as well!
A note: We have made dishes with permanent markers in the past, but they always fade so quickly. These Painters paint pens were so easy to use, and the colors are so much more vibrant and rich than the colors from permanent markers! They are definitely my go-to for these types of projects now!
In order to make your own Christmas paint pen plates you will need the following:
- mugs (I got mine at the dollar store.)
- Elmer’s Painters paint pens
- rubbing alcohol
Prep the mugs by wiping them down with rubbing alcohol. Allow the rubbing alcohol to dry. Now simply open up those Painters pens and have fun being creative!
Once the mugs are fully decorated, set them aside for two or three days to cure. Once they have cured you are going to bake them. Place them in a COLD oven on cookie sheets. Turn on the oven to 375 degrees and bake for 30 minutes. Turn off the oven and let the plates cool inside of the oven.
Done! Now fill your Christmas paint pen mugs up with hot cocoa and sit by the fire sipping it or package them up as a gift for a grandparent or other loved one! I recommend hand washing them to preserve the colors over time.
My boy is always so proud of his artistic creations. I love his confidence and enthusiasm for creative endeavors! My favorite part of his mugs is Santa’s sleigh and reindeer wrapping around one of them.
I hope that you are inspired to create your own Christmas paint pen mugs! Merry Christmas!
