Norway’s latest royal wedding has officially come and gone. Princess Märtha Louise tied the knot with Durek Verrett, a California-based shaman, on Saturday, August 31, 2024. According to Hello!, 350 guests attended the nuptials at the Hotel Union in Geiranger, a small village in the western part of the country. Parish priest Margit Lovise Holte led the ceremony.
The multi-day celebration officially kicked off on August 29, 2024, with an intimate reception for close family and friends of the couple at Hotel 1904 in Alesund, according to Hello!. Wearing matching pink ensembles in accordance with the “sexy and cool” dress code, the bride donned a halterneck dress from her own brand, Hést, while the groom sported a suit jacket and trousers. On the second day of festivities, the couple and their guests enjoyed a boat ride along the Geiranger Fjord (which included a wave to the bride’s parents on the royal yacht!) before arriving at Geiranger—and preparing for the final pre-wedding event: a salsa party. The bride wore a Tina Steffenakk Hermansen pink dress to the Friday night celebration, Hello! reported.
On Saturday afternoon, the couple, who got engaged in 2022, officially tied the knot. Märtha Louise’s parents, King Harald V and Queen Sonja, were both in attendance at the couple’s nuptials, as well as the bride’s brother, Crown Prince Haakon and his family—Crown Princess Mette-Marit (his wife), Princess Ingrid Alexandra (his daughter), and Prince Sverre Magnus (his son). The wedding was also attended by other members of Nordic country royalty: Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and her brother Prince Carl Philip. While few American celebrities were spotted at the big day, Cynthia Bailey, a cast member of the Real Housewives of Atlanta was reported to be in attendance, according to the BBC. The bride’s three children from her previous marriage to Ari Behn, Maud, Leah, and Emma, were also present at the ceremony. The three daughters wore matching gold dresses from Rikke Boe, Hello! reported; Leah and Emma led the processional, while Maud, the princess’s eldest child, walked her down the aisle.
The bride wore a sleeveless wedding dress embroidered with flowers from Tina Steffenakk Hermansen—a Norwegian designer who she had also turned to for her Friday night look—paired with a long train and a tiara gifted to her by her grandfather, King Olav, on her 18th birthday, Hello! reported. In tapping a local designer for her gown, the princess continued a tradition she began 22 years ago with her first wedding, when she wore a dress designed by Norway’s Wenche Lyche. Her new husband donned a black tuxedo with a gold cummerbund, in accordance with the dress code the newlyweds had set for the occasion.
"I promise to love you with all my heart,” Märtha Louise told the shaman in her vows. "I promise to take responsibility for my emotions. I promise to love you because I know you know that my girls come first. And I promise I will walk with you to the best of my ability because we are always changed although we are always the same. Because we are always the past, the present and the future in one." The couple followed their ceremony with a reception at the hotel.
The newlyweds were also joined by an unique group of guests over their multi-day celebration: a camera crew. Durek recently announced on Instagram that his and Märtha’s love story will be the subject of an upcoming Netflix documentary. “The untitled documentary is a never-before-seen look at one of the most-discussed couples and explores their love story from the early days to the present day and how they navigate their new life surrounded by constant attention from the public,” the caption read. The release date has not yet been announced.
