There’s a reason it’s called the Hostess City of the South.

Ah, Savannah. With its stately Southern mansions, picturesque garden squares, gorgeous live oaks with hanging Spanish moss, and thriving arts and music scene, the Hostess City of the South—and oldest city in the state of Georgia—offers both romance and excitement for honeymooners around every turn.

"In Savannah, there are lots of little nooks and crannies where you can spoil yourself and celebrate being newlyweds," says travel consultant Amina Dearmon. "Southern hospitality is also fully ingrained in folks there, and that translates to honeymooners getting a very immersive and authentic experience."

Add in cute shops, delicious restaurants, and the ability to carry a cocktail as you stroll the Historic District (thank you, open container laws!), and it's no wonder the town—a two-hour flight from New York and four-hour drive from Atlanta—is such a popular destination. And, with a relatively recent hotel renaissance, there are now more options than ever when it comes to selecting a stylish place to stay.

Ready to start planning your Savannah, Georgia honeymoon? Read on for all the crucial info, including what to budget, the best season to visit, and the most romantic hotels, inns, and B&Bs.

Average Cost of a Savannah Honeymoon

As with any trip, a Savannah honeymoon will vary greatly in cost depending on duration, hotel and restaurant selection, and the activities you choose. For her clients, Dearmon recommends budgeting around $500 per night for accommodations if they're looking for a well-appointed hotel in a central location (that estimate jumps to $750 to $1,000 per night for a suite). Private tours—a wonderful way to learn about the architecture or ghostly history of the town—run $200 to $300 per person, but rates can go down to $50 per person if you go with a group option. For meals at buzzy restaurants like Husk and The Grey, expect to spend around $30 to $40 per entrée.

Best Time to Visit Savannah

Savannah is truly a four-season city, but, for Dearmon, the best time to visit is spring. "There’s lower humidity, and you’re not worried about hurricanes," she says. There’s also a sweet spot when S.C.A.D.—that’s the Savannah College of Art & Design—students are out on break, so things are a little quieter and easier to navigate. And, of course, the city’s many glorious gardens are in bloom! That said, if you can stand the hot weather, summer typically sees fewer tourists, so your time out and about will absolutely involve more interaction with locals.

"In Savannah, my go-to is the Perry Lane Hotel. It feels like home as soon as you walk into it," says Dearmon, who notes that several of the amenities—sparkling wine, a car service, little treats in the room, afternoon tea—really augment the celebratory experience of a honeymoon. Marriott loyalists will be happy to know that Perry Lane is a Luxury Collection property, the first in all of Savannah, but even those without reward points to spend will enjoy the residential feel of the lobby and library lounge, meals at the Emporium Kitchen & Wine Market, and the outdoor pool deck, where the hotel’s signature striped loungers offer a stylish spot to chat and relax.

This eye-catching, 50-room Preferred Hotels property brings a little of the bon vivant style of the Big Easy to the Georgia coast. Housed in a restored 19th-century building just off the Savannah River, the Drayton’s interiors feature pops of color around every corner as well as subtle nods to the city (Think: herringbone brick floors to evoke Savannah’s cobblestone streets.). Though there’s no pool, honeymooners can share a seafood tower at onsite eatery St. Neo’s Brasserie, sip cocktails at either the rooftop or downstairs bar, and kickstart the day in the utterly Instagrammable lobby with lattes and root beer doughnuts from the hotel’s coffee bar.

Prior to the hotel renaissance in the city's historic district, many overnight travelers opted to rest their heads in one of Savannah’s romantic inns and B&Bs. With a history as a grand French Empire-style home dating back to 1873, the Hamilton-Turner Inn, located just off the southwest corner of Lafayette Square, ups the honeymoon ante with opulent interiors and working fireplaces and clawfoot tubs in many of the 17 rooms. The signature Southern hospitality the city is known for feels especially palpable during the complimentary breakfast service, where you’ll enjoy a lavish spread of homemade scones and egg dishes, as well as evening cocktail hour, during which guests are served gratis glasses of wine and hors d'oeuvres in the parlor.

This massive new right-on-the-riverfront development, Savannah’s largest hospitality project to date, debuted in 2020, and it's ideal for couples looking for a lively all-in-one hotel option for their honeymoon. Love live music? You won’t even have to venture off property thanks to new concert hall District Live, and after the show, you can venture to one of two (or both!) buzzy rooftop bars. "This is a great property because it’s kind of like a zone unto itself," says Dearmon. "They have everything."

Perhaps best known for its Mayakoba property in Mexico’s Playa del Carmen, Hyatt’s Andaz hospitality brand is at its most immersive in resort form. But that doesn’t stop Andaz Savannah, which is comfortably situated just off Ellis Square in the historic section of the city, from being a delightful option for honeymooners. A customizable breakfast at the onsite restaurant 22 Square is a great way to kick off a day of in-town exploration, while the outdoor pool offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere on a relaxed afternoon. For a longer stay, book a deluxe suite or loft, which comes with cheery white Smeg refrigerators in the hosting kitchens and big-enough-for-two European-style showers.

The second-floor outdoor deck boasts private cabanas and a pool with an extra-wide shallow deck so that some lounge chairs can sit directly in the water, while the dining options include Fleeting, a seasonal restaurant heavily influenced by the Georgia coast, and Bar Julian, Savannah’s tallest rooftop bar serving pizzas, creative cocktails, and Mediterranean bites.

Well-heeled Southerners seem to gravitate towards this Autograph Collection chainlet, which also has properties in Birmingham, Asheville, Charleston, and Charlotte. In Savannah, the rooms feel sumptuous thanks to touch-me textures like leather and velvet, and there are waterfront views aplenty at the rooftop restaurant and bar. As is the case with many Savannah hotels, pets are welcome, so if you’re within driving distance, feel free to bring Fido along for the fun.

The Gastonian is comprised of two adjacent stone mansions, each built in 1868, that are connected by a wooden walkway and pergola. Each one is decked out with tasteful antiques, and some accommodations also feature private balconies and clawfoot tubs. On the food and beverage front, the inn chefs will happily prepare you a picnic lunch to enjoy in nearby Forsyth Park, and breakfast and happy hour beverages are complimentary every day. At 850 square feet, with its own drawing room and whirlpool tub surrounded by drapery and topped with a glitzy chandelier, the inn’s Caracalla suite is so popular with newly married couples that it’s often referred to as the honeymoon suite.

17th Street Inn

Just 18 miles from downtown Savannah, Tybee Island is a small barrier island that boasts three miles of shoreline along the Atlantic Ocean. Meaning: if you also want to experience the beach on your Savannah honeymoon, this is the closest place to head. Lodging options on Tybee tend to skew quaint or retro, but a more recent wave of boutique "vintage modern" properties offer the best of old and new. In Tybee’s more lively South Beach section, the flamingo pink 17th Street Inn is a fun place to stay. 160 steps from the beach, the eight-room inn is low on frills, but the rooms are bright and airy, and the tropics-inspired wraparound deck is a great place to mingle with other travelers.

On Tybee’s quieter North Beach, Sherry Stipp and Cindy Sukal transformed a Free Classic Queen Anne home located 300 steps from the water into a tidy bed & breakfast in 2015. With just five rooms, it's an ideal spot for proper R&R—especially because the grand wraparound porch features lounge chairs and leads to a private in-ground pool. While you’re there, be sure to make at least one visit to the nearby Tybee Island Lighthouse, Georgia’s oldest and tallest.

The Park

Ninety minutes away from Savannah on Georgia’s St. Simons Island, The Park is definitely not the closest option when it comes to great Savannah-area accommodations. That said, design fiends prioritizing Insta-perfect accommodations for their honeymoon will absolutely adore it. Run by SSI creatives Bryce Brock and Kelly Revels, who also operate the island’s stylish garden market The Vine, the five-home compound encourages indoor-outdoor living and clusters accommodations around a heated pool. The interiors vary between the five beach cottages, but all are bright and stylish and come with their own kitchens. For the full St. Simons experience, leave your car in the lot and rent a golf cart to drive around the island.
