Overview
Volvo's XC60 SUV competes in the compact luxury SUV segment but cleverly crafts its own identity using its trademark blend of understated Scandinavian styling and purposeful yet well-appointed interior design. Modern trademark Volvo tells, including the Thor's Hammer headlamps and the curvaceous Nordic design of the front seats, contribute to the distinctive appeal. XC60 buyers have a choice of two powertrains: the 247-hp B5 and the 455-hp T8 plug-in hybrid (reviewed separately). The B5 provides ample thrust, but the T8 PHEV offers improved efficiency with much quicker acceleration. While the XC60 provides reasonably direct steering response and adequate grip for an SUV, it lacks the performance-focused and athletic demeanor of rivals such as the Porsche Macan and BMW X3. In terms of day-to-day practicality, the Audi Q5 offers more cargo space. Infotainment duties are handled by Volvo's Google-based infotainment system, which gets the job done but could be more intuitive. Still, the XC60 is a balanced yet intriguing option in a competitive segment. As one of our favorites in its segment, the Volvo XC60 has earned a spot on our Editors' Choice list for 2025.
Where This Vehicle Ranks
#5 in Best Compact Luxury SUVsWhat's New for 2025?
Not much. Refreshed just last year, the XC60 carries over to 2025 virtually unchanged aside from some minor trim name shuffling. Last year's Ultimate trim is now called Ultra.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2025 Volvo XC60 starts at $48,345 and goes up to $59,395 depending on the trim and options.
Our pick is the mid-range Plus trim. Price-wise, it's a short step up from the Core trim, and includes 19-inch wheels (Core has 18s) a 360-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Volvo offers two different powertrains in the XC60. The base nonhybrid B5 utilizes a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 48-volt hybrid system making 247 horsepower. The B5 comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The XC60 corners precisely and the chassis feels well planted, but harsher road imperfections can be felt in the cabin. Confidence is the key word here, not aggression. A plug-in hybrid powertrain dubbed the T8 is also available, although we review that model separately.
0-60-MPH Times
Volvo claims a zero-to-60 time of 6.5 seconds for the XC60 B5, but we haven't tested one since 2018 when it was called T5 and didn't have a 48-volt hybrid system. That model managed a 6.4-second run to 60 mph, though, so Volvo's estimate seems about right.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA estimates that the XC60 B5 should deliver 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway; we'll update this story with our own real-world numbers when we test an XC60 with the B5 powertrain. For more information about the XC60's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
With interior styling and rich materials that mirror more expensive Volvos, the XC60 is like having your kladdkaka and eating it, too. The quiet, comfortable cabin also provides adult-sized accommodations in both rows. Clean lines and high-quality materials add a distinctly Scandinavian flavor to the XC60's cabin—and we'd expect nothing less from a modern Volvo. Decent cargo-hauling capability puts the XC60 mid-pack among its rivals in our testing; with its rear seats folded, we fit 20 of our carry-on suitcases. Interior cubby storage is limited, though, and the sole cargo-area bin is among the smallest we've measured.
Infotainment and Connectivity
All XC60 models come with a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display that runs Volvo's latest Google-based software interface. The system provides several personalization options and offers voice controls via the Google Assistant. We've found the software interface to be quick to respond, but its menus take some getting used to. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, as is Bluetooth connectivity and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot powered by a 4G LTE data connection.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Overall Safety Rating (NHTSA)
Volvo's commitment to safety is evident in the XC60, with driver-assistance features such as automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist standard across the range. For more information about the XC60's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
- Available adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Relative to its rivals in this segment, the XC60 has an appealing warranty policy. Three years of scheduled maintenance is a convenience that Volvo buyers won't need to pay for separately, either.
- Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
- Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles
