Giri Plays Nepal's Top Players In Chess.com Simul
On July 16, GM Anish Giri played a 30-board simul on Chess.com against the top-ranked players of Nepal, the home country of Giri's father. Giri scored 28/30 while streaming the simul on his channel.
The simul was organized by the Nepal Chess Association and hosted by Chess.com. Giri's opponents were a mixed opposition at the top of their country's rankings in their respective categories:
- 15 top-rated players the top three of the 21st Nepal Chess Championship
- 9 youth players including the U-20 and U-18 national online champions and the top-rated players in the age categories U-20, U-18, U-16, U-14. U-12, and U-10.
- 5 female players including the top-three from the sixth Nepal Women's Chess Championship as well as the U-20 and U-18 national online champions.
- The 50+ Senior Champion.
The simul was played over 29 boards as one player sadly disconnected after the first move. Giri's opponents got 10 minutes for the game and a 15-second increment per move, while the Dutch GM got two hours and 10 minutes plus a 15-second increment. Note that he had to return moves against all boards in that timeframe.
Giri managed to stay undefeated and only conceded four draws. Most of the wins came easily, as is often the case with simuls, while for some he had to work harder. For instance, see the following game.
In the following game, Giri didn't get anything as White against a Sveshnikov (It was nice to see the grandmaster step away from his usual repertoire and going for 1.e4 in almost all games) and ended up in an endgame with rooks and opposite-colored bishops, being a pawn down.
