African Methodist Episcopal
The AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church was formed in 1816 by Rev. Richard Allen. Starting as a break away group from the Methodists during the time when racial discrimination was the current trend, the AME Church remained Methodist in doctrine, order of worship, and church organization. The AME's motto is "God our Father, Christ our Redeemer, Holy Spirit our Comforter, Humankind our Family." Their mission is "to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and environmental needs of all people by spreading Christ's liberating gospel through word and deed."
