The Wilkes-Barre Area School District plans to install artificial turf later this month for two multi-purpose fields on the high school campus in Plains Twp.
The two-multi-purpose fields will be ready for the upcoming school year and will be used for softball, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse and football, Superintendent Brian Costello said. It’s a $5-million project.
The multi-purpose fields will have lights and are located by Wolfpack Stadium on the campus. The $9-million stadium opened on the campus last September with a
$5 million field house under construction.
The field house will include locker rooms, showers, public restrooms and a concession stand, and it and will also be ready for the upcoming school year. After the fall sports season, the school district will begin a $4.8-million project to build one synthetic turf baseball field and six tennis courts on the campus.
The new consolidated high school in Plains Twp. opened in September 2021 after the district borrowed $121 million to fund that project. Wilkes-Barre Area closed Meyers and Coughlin high schools in June 2021, and GAR High School became a middle school.
