Joe Burrow knocked out of Ohio State backup quarterback race by injury: Ohio State football news

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The backup quarterback race between Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins has been decided, at least for now. An injury made the call.

Burrow is out indefinitely after having surgery on his right hand Tuesday. He broke a bone in his throwing hand Monday during practice.

Urban Meyer and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day had not named J.T. Barrett's backup as Burrow, a redshirt sophomore, and Haskins, a redshirt freshman, battled during preseason camp.

Now it's Haskins, a talented thrower from Maryland who hasn't taken a snap in a game yet, who will be No. 2 behind Barrett for at least the first month of the season.

Burrow served as the backup last season, entering six games at the end of wins and completing 22 of 28 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran 12 times for 58 yards and a score.
