The Uttar Pradesh Police on Sunday arrested three men for allegedly sexually assaulting a student inside the Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University campus in Varanasi in November, PTI reported.
Last month, massive protests erupted at the Indian Institute of Technology, BHU, Varanasi, campus following a female student's harrowing allegation. She alleged that on the night of November 1, three unidentified men on a motorcycle accosted her, molested her, forcibly kissed her, and recorded a distressing video after disrobing her.
After the incident, a case was filed at the Lanka police station against unknown individuals, invoking relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), specifically 354-B (of assault or use of criminal force against a woman with the intent to disrobe), 506 (related to criminal intimidation), and as per provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
The student, in her police complaint, stated: “I am a resident of a hostel at IIT-BHU. On November 2, around 1.30 am, I left my hostel for a walk. I met a male friend… We were walking together when… a motorcycle with three men approached us from behind. They parked their motorcycle there and separated my friend and me. They shut my mouth tightly and took me to a corner, kissed me forcibly, took off my clothes and recorded photos and videos. When I shouted for help, they threatened to kill me. They let me go after 10-15 minutes. When I ran towards my hostel, I heard the sound of the motorcycle. Then, I hid at the residence of a professor, who took me to the security officials.”
Subsequently, the charge of gang rape was added to the FIR, PTI quoted the police as saying. PTI quoted Shivakant Mishra, the station house officer of the Lanka police station, as identifying the three men as Kunal Pandey, Saksham Patel and Abhishek Chauhan.
Opposition parties have attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging that the accused are linked to the ruling party.
Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party said on social media platform X that those arrested were part of a new generation of BJP workers flourishing under the protection of senior leaders. Yadav contended that the Uttar Pradesh government had no choice but to apprehend the individuals due to substantial evidence and the increasing public outrage.
“Every woman across the country is seeing how the BJP is playing with women’s dignity and protecting those accused of atrocities, harassment and rape,” Yadav said. “Women will not give even a single vote to the BJP in the upcoming elections. Women will be the reason for the BJP’s defeat.”
Congress’ Uttar Pradesh chief Ajay Rai alleged that Pandey served as the convener of the BJP’s Mahanagar information technology cell, while Saksham Patel was the personal assistant of Dilip Patel, the Hindutva party's Kashi zone chief. Rai criticized this as the "evil face of BJP" in a social media post.
However, Dilip Patel refuted the claims, stating to the Hindustan Times that Saksham Patel was never his assistant. Patel clarified that although Saksham Patel had accompanied him as a worker occasionally, he had severed ties with the BJP and Patel two months before the incident.
In response, the BJP assured that those found guilty would face legal consequences. Party spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi emphasized that, under the BJP government, individuals associated with the party who commit crimes will be arrested and subjected to strict punishment, as quoted by the newspaper.
