In the upcoming Assembly elections, Congress is eyeing a major comeback in Haryana after sitting in the Opposition for 10 years. Relying on its heavyweights, the grand old party is going solo in the polls, as the alliance talks with the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) remained inconclusive over seat-sharing issues.
Buoyed by its success in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections where it secured a win on half of the 10 parliamentary constituencies in Haryana, the Congress party is going all out in the poll campaigning to oust the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power in the upcoming Assembly polls.
Out of the 90 Assembly constituencies, Congress has nominated its candidates on 89 seats, leaving the Bhiwani seat for the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Following days of hard bargaining, Congress and AAP were unable to finalise a deal as both the INDIA bloc members had different views on the seat-sharing. The two parties contested 2024 general elections together in Delhi, but fought separately in Punjab.
During the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections, the BJP bagged 40 out of 90 seats, while the Congress emerged victorious on 31 and 10 seats went to the Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party (JJP). As no party was able to cross the majority mark on its own, the BJP later formed a coalition government in alliance with JJP. However, both of them parted ways earlier this year.
This time, Haryana is witnessing a multi-corner contest, as the ruling BJP and Congress are going neck and neck against each other. Among others in the fray are the AAP; JJP and Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) alliance; Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) alliance, among others.
