Toyota Corolla turns 50, gifts itself two new editions (pictures)

Toyota's plucky little Corolla turns 50 this year and the automaker is celebrating with a new look, new features and a 50th Anniversary Special Edition.

The 50th Edition is finished in a unique black cherry color and rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels with dark gray inserts and machined faces. "Complex-LED headlamps" add a bit of jewelry to the front end.

All 2017 Corolla models, including this one, will now feature a standard rear camera.

50th Anniversary badging inside and out help to mark this edition as a special one. The black cherry color scheme continues into the cabin stitching, accents and more.

The Corolla also gains a new, sporty XSE trim level near the top of its lineup. Across the line, the sedan's front bumper design has been changed dramatically.

The 2017 Corolla will also debut Toyota's Safety Sense-P technology options.

This suite of driver aid functions includes a forward pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist and automatic high beams.

LED headlamps are standard across the line, but the upper SE, XSE and XLE models also feature the same "complex LED" headlamps of the 50th anniversary model.

It's not yet clear if this XSE features a more aggressive fascia than the average Corolla, but the visage is certainly shared with the 50th anniversary model.

Inside, the Entune infotainment system gets a bump. The top-trim model grows to a 7-inch screen.

Entune is standard, but GPS navigation is not. There are also two levels of navigation: Scout GPS App Link or onboard Entune navigaion.

Aside from the Entune upgrade and the new driver aid features, any changes to the Corolla's interior are subtle.

The refresh helps to keep the Toyota Corolla current with the competition -- not that world's all-time best-selling car needs much help.
