Review: Mount Baldy

Let’s start big picture.
At 10,068 feet, Mount Baldy is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains (and the highest point in Los Angeles County). The hike itself is about 6.5 miles long and climbs 2,300 feet. It's definitely for more seasoned hikers, but you can also shave off four miles by doing a "cheat" and taking a chair lift (unless you're feeling particularly ambitious, you'll want to take the lift down regardless).
Any standout features or must-sees?
The mountain gets its name from the absence of trees at the top—it's a surreal sub-alpine sight. You'll want to soak it all in at Devil's Backbone, where you'll feel like you're hiking atop a stegosaurus' spine, with sheer drops off each side.
Was it easy to get around?
Though the mountain is relatively easy to navigate, you shouldn't underestimate it. You'll be putting your body to the test. The weather patterns can also change quickly, especially in the winter months, so come prepared for a storm.
All said and done, what—and who—is this best for?
This is perfect for the SoCal hiker who wants to challenge themselves. Everyone who lives here should try it at least once.
